Zokora New Contract?

Premier League Tottenham Hotspur

I've just seen that Zokora has been given a new 4 year contract with us. I think that this is a crazy decision- he's the weakest link in our first eleven, and his performance in the first half against Chelsea was one of almost laughable incompetence. When Big Tom Huddlestone came on he bossed the midfield and made some good passes, and we looked much better almost immediately.

Zokora isn't good enough nor focused enough to run a midfield and protect a lightweight team like Modric, Dos Santos, Lennon and Bentley. We are going to be bullied all season, and teams are going to cut right through us just like Sunderland and Boro did.

Zokora- He can't pass, He won't stay in position, he can't shoot and his tackling and ball control are mediocre at best. Sure, he can play at RB or DM or CB, but he's dreadful in all of those positions, so what's the point?

I think that concentrating on AM and CF positions all Summer has left us in a very precarious position, and have a go at me all you like for saying it, it doesn't change the basic truth- a team with Didier Zokora in midfield will do very well indeed to finish in the top 8 next season.

Blimey you been asleep?
I gotta be honest, I don't rate him at all. Think back to the CC final and he did more than anyone to hand the cup to Chelsea, with his suicidal tackling outside our box and his inability to hit the target with only the keeper to beat. I think he's a family friend of Comolli's.

Sorry did I dream the reckless tackles on Drogba? giving him at least 2 goes until he finally put it in the net on the third? Did I imagine him all alone against Cech? blasting it straight at him and then blazing the rebound into row Z?
Sorry lads but I grew up watching Hoddle, Roberts, and Perryman in the Spurs midfield. Maybe my standards are higher.

ozziesdream

I will admit I have been fairly critical of him in the past but I beleive he still has a role to play at Spurs. If he maintains form then he can be utilised imo.

I like him as a character and I do want him to do well. I'm just not convinced he's of the quality we need.

He was excellent in the first half? What on earth are you on about? Is that you Mr. Comolli?

I like Zokora.

He's a versatile player who gives the coach many options.

His primary position is midfield - but already he has filled in well at right back. Last season he even played in centre defence.

Smart move on the part of the club.

On top of that I like his enthusiasm and post-game celebrations...

Darragh says,

"Zokora isn't good enough nor focused enough to run a midfield and protect a lightweight team like Modric, Dos Santos, Lennon and Bentley. We are going to be bullied all season, and teams are going to cut right through us just like Sunderland and Boro did."

Well Darragh one of the reasons Sunderland and Boro did that was because Zokora wasn't there in midfield at all. He was playing right full back.

Zokora changed things by being back in midfield against Chelsea and from watching that game he was the main difference we managed to hold them out and come back strongly. When Huddlestone came on Modric was allowed have some freedom and we looked better balanced.

You then persist with

And you then go on to say how awful Zokora is in every position. But that is blatent bias. Anyone who saw how important Zokora was filling in at CB when required and doing so well last season couldn't possibly have been watching the same player. And to go on and say he was terrible against Chelsea in either games is pure nonsense and mischief making.

Why not say you just don't agree with Jol or Ramos about their rating of this player. You certainly wouldn't be alone.

Perhaps you should have put in "Zokora isn't good enough nor focused enough to run a midfield and protect a lightweight team like Modric, Dos Santos, Lennon, Bentley and Jenas."

But such an original thread and a well put diagnosis like "his performance in the first half against Chelsea was one of almost laughable incompetence." and "it doesn't change the basic truth- a team with Didier Zokora in midfield will do very well indeed to finish in the top 8 next season." On what basis do you presume the latter basic truth? Zokora was in the side that finished 5th or not? And he did get Malaria last season being ou tsick for a prolonged period having come back from the African nations Cup? That's real sick too and it takes some people forever to get over it. But when he camne back and got picked to paly he was probably one of outr best players through the latter part of last season and into this one.

Yes he has his faults and what player does not? But he is also the sort of player that is in very short supply in our squad. He's the sort of player you'll only realise the value of when he is not there. He is a vital member of this squad and it doesn't surprise me in the slightest he has been given an extended contract. To have chosen to do otherwise, would have been an expensive mistake. Even Corluca another very valuable member of this squad now, cannot cover with the pace required. But Corluca is a footballer and I feel he might complement Zokora well in away games. In fact, he'd likely complement Jenas too.
