THE ARSENAL "EXPERIMENT"

Arsenal

comment on the article

I heard Wenger describe the club's apparent "policy" of buiding a team around homegrown youth as an "experiment" , which might succeed or might fail.

I wondered what fellow Gooners felt about our club being run on an "experimental" basis and whether anybody thinks that this might just be trying to dignify what is an inability to spend in the transfer market ( due to the downturn in the value of property assets owned by the club)?

I wonder also how Wenger's plans, apparantely aimed at fostering a group of players who "love " the club, sit alongside the club's refusal to pay very top wages to individuals( not the overral wage bill). Does Wenger expect a professional footballer to put his "love" of his club above his own livelihood ? Will Wenger apply that same priciple to his own financial position as manager and not insist on the very top wages ( which he gets)?

If so, can players also expect Wenger to "stay" with them when their form drops or they get catastrophically injured, or over 30, for the "spirit" of the team?

The success of an experiment can only be
measured by outcome versus expectation.

If the expectation is that Arsenal will fall behind and be unable to compete, then the experiment is a success.

The real question though, is who, is
The Director For Music to My Ears
that agreed the experiment was good for Arsenal,
or does Wenger just do what he wants?

IN CONTRAST TO OTHER CLUBS WENGER DOES WHAT HE WANTS AND THE BOARD ALLOW IT. I BET HE IS APPOINTING YOUR CHIEF EXEC IT SHOULD BE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM YET APPARENTLY HE WAS CONSULTED!!

UNITED WOULD NOT CONSULT SIR ALKY OVER A NEW CHIEF EXEC SO WHY WENGER? COZ WENGER HAD HIS DIGITS IN EVERY PIE AT ARSENAL, HE SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON WHAT HE'S GOOD AT AND THATS COACHING. MONEY, WAGES ETC. ALL LEFT TO THE BOARD.

AW CANT HELP MEDDLING AND TINKERING WITH THINGS THAT DONT CONCERN HIM.

Your posting proves anyone with a minimal level of intellect can start a discussion about nothing of substance and succeed in getting likeminds excited. What a waste of 606 real estate!

He is on a mission to prove that he can win even in the face of insumountable odds, it's noble, almost British Bulldog from the Frenchman, but ultimately doomed to failure.

He is going to undo all the good work of his first 7 seasons and will eventually become an embarrassing fixture that no-one dares remove, just like Ole Big 'Ed 160 miles up the M1

It is still at "might" since we're at the start of the experiment.

askido351 - are you suggesting that the 'experiment' has failed because we've not won for 3 seasons? You do know that before Wenger we were in the same sort of league as Villa and Portsmouth are now right? If you want to know what agony is like read up on the history of AFC from the 70s until 1989, as you clearly only started supporting the club in the mid-90's after Wengers first double.

Believe it or not, as a board and manager, Arsene and co are thinking 10/15 years into the future when our fiscal prudence now will pave the way for us being the only top flight club in the country that is not in debt. It will be an awesome achievement if they do it, and a few seasons where we 'only' come third in the toughest league in the world and we 'only' get to the finals of the Champions League will be a pretty small price to pay.

And by the way, if you are treating it as an 'experiment', then in terms of Premiership success (which is the best indicator) it is surely working pretty well. Our points tally was a good 20 higher last season than the season before. That by itself ought to be a vindication of the method
