He's not the Messiah

Premier League Sunderland

Since the so called 'glory days' when Keegan took Newcastle to within touching distance of the title (and then threw it away due to tactical ineptitude and a couple of cracking goals by Graham Fenton away at Blackburn,) we have been up and down like the proverbial whores drawers.

The post-1992 Mags have never experienced relegation. Apart from our consecutive top seven finishes and a couple of 2-1 wins at SJP they have been in the comfort zone, safe in the knowledge that Sunderland were in a constant state of turmoil.

Hence the present mood of total despair among the Geordie ranks. Their 'Messiah' has deserted them yet again and they vent their wrath upon the owner. The same owner who bailed them out of the potential financial 'meltdown' that he inherited from the previous regime.

The Mags regard Keegan as the spiritual leader of a mythical 'Geordie Nation' (a term coined by another dodgy businessman who made a fortune out of the club.) He is no 'Messiah.' His management record is poor at the top level and his way of dealing with adversity is to walk away from it. That is not opinion, it is fact.

Stability and Newcastle United don't belong in the same sentence. Until they resolve that issue the club will continue to lurch from crisis to crisis while the 'believers' will yearn for the return of the King.

As the record books will prove, the 'glory days' for Newcastle United were in the 1950s, not the mid '90s.

There are no 'Messiahs' in the North East, although there are a couple of fellas who come pretty close.

Niall Quinn and Steve Gibson.

Newcastle United are a completly unmanagable club.

Why?

Hero Worship !!!

Its ridiculous how a set of supporters can worship men who have achieved so little even Man United fans don't worship Fergie the way the geordies have the following "Wour Jackie", Keegan and Shearer even their most succesful player Moncur does not receive the status these men do.

I was expecting a Monty Python quote but a good article all the same. ok

Mike Ashley should have known hiring Keegan was too much. His following is fanatical, almost religious. He's a top bloke, no doubts but as a tactician, he is very average.

MA was hoping he could combine the popularity of Keegan with the managerial skills (?!) of Dennis Wise but there's no way that would wash with the black and white public.

I honestly believe that King Kev could be caught punching kittens in the haymarket and yet still be supported 100%!

I like Kev as much as the next Geordie but honestly, it's not the end of the world without him.

RJB - the scenes this week have been reminiscent of some international disaster. TV crews have been at the scene to interview 100's of people wandering around Sid James looking to pick up the pieces of their devastated lives. All looking directly into the camera lenses and asking "why us....why us".

I have half expected to see a personal visit by the PM after demands by locals on the ground as to what Government was doing to help the victims.

Perhaps Bob Geldof is planning a sort of 'Toon Aid' concert in Benwell, to help the plight of these hapless rent-a-mob knuckle-draggers we have been subjected to every night.

They really believe that they are a world power in football while in reality, they are a sad bunch of delusional half wits who are mocked and ridiculed by the rest of the Nation. The next manager at Sid James will have the same ridiculous expectations placed upon him and will ultimately fail due to the belief that the 'toon' should be Champions every year.

They have been a nothing club to all but those in and around the Bigg Market for 40 years. When they wake up and smell the coffee maybe we will take them more seriously.

Ashley's may well have been very close to the ultimate business coup, but fallen at the last hurdle...

It now looks as though he came in all guns blazing, trying to make the club look like a big fish, appointing the 'Messiah' to get some momentum going, wearing the Toon strip even though he has never supported them, spending very little and doubling the clubs 'worth' in the process, ready for an investor to come in and take it off his hands. Media comments suggest he was close to getting a buyer, taking a fat cheque and walking away, job done...

Unfortunately the buyers didnt materialise, and Kevin is not a man to be messed with, so it all unravelled in the train-wreck of this week.

Right now he must be desperate to ditch the club, and would no doubt take a money-back offer if one was presented to him.

And if anyone wants an indication of the faith the Toon have in Keegan, a Mag said to me this morning that they need a new buyer, to come in sweep up the whole mess and re-appoint Keegan... I kid you not. doh
