Humble Cerny out to change minds

Championship QPR
comment on the article

Radek Cerny is well aware he isn’t popular with a section of QPR supporters.

He couldn’t fail to hear Lee Camp’s name being chanted just minutes into the Czech keeper’s Rangers debut on the opening day of the season.

Many believe Camp should not have been dropped and some early errors by the new man did not help his cause.

But Cerny enjoyed his best moment for the club so far when he produced a fine late save to help secure a point at Bristol City on Saturday.

He is humble about his lukewarm reception, saying: “I understand. The supporters know Lee but don’t know me.

“I will do my best to change the minds of supporters to be nice to me. I think if we do okay and win lots of games the supporters will like me. If we are winning I don’t think they will mind who is in goal.”

Camp himself is proof of this. He initially arrived as cover for the injured Chris Day, who was also well liked after a number of fine performances and crucial saves.

But there were few grumbles when Day spent the latter part of Rangers’ promotion season on the bench, with Camp having quickly established himself as the fans’ choice.

It remains to be seen whether Cerny can follow the same path. He certainly took a step in the right direction with that save at the weekend.

Dont understand why he didnt play against Carlisle Rblock. Thought he did well against Swindon as the two goals were not his fault.

Yeah strange one that Toboboly, I know we're taking the cup seriously and that Carlisle aren't a bad side, but you would have thought a home draw was the perfect opportunity to give Camp a game. He gave Bolder a run out after all!
It did come early in the season though, and if Cerny's his choice, perhaps Dowie felt he could do with a little more time to get to know the defence.

True, but why not let Cerny play vs. Swindon? That was an earlier game? Much of what happens regarding Camp and Rowly doesnt seem to make sense. Why have Rowly as Captain and then not play him regularly??

Well Rowly was banned, and has actually played in every game since the ban was lifted, albeit only as a sub in the league. I think he'll be back in the starting line-up given time, maybe even in place of Ledesma against the Saints (although we all know that's not his best position).

How do you think he looked against Carlisle?
I thought he looked very keen, but quite rusty early on, with some very untypical misplaced passes. He got better and better though, and his tackling and overall play in the second half was getting closer to his old self. Once he's up to speed there's no way Ledge or Mahon can keep him out.

I know he was banned Rblock!! Imeant when he came back. I wouldve started him and then subbed him should he not be match fit rather than bringing him on for 20 odd minutes.

Yeah he covered every inch of pitch against Carlisle but as you say was a little rusty. I would rather have him and Parejo centrally once Parejo is back and leave Legs on the bench and Mahon as an emergency.

Very attacking Tobob, still as part of a 4-2-3-1?
Parejo would have to dig in hard to play Mahon's role.

If we stick with that formation, or even in a 4-4-2, I'm not sure Parejo, Rowly, Ledesma, Cook and Buz can all play. I guess with Buz off the striker, then the two wingers outside Rowly and Parejo we've got balance, I'm just not sure it would posess enough grit against the tougher sides. I'd like to see it though!

Cerny's problem is he is trying to hard to please the fans that are'nt keen on him. Overall he is a better keeper than Camp & has more experience. If he concentrates on his game, rather than the few mindless idiots, then we should see the best of him.

Ive been impressed with Parejo's tracking back and willingness to tackle tbh. With Rowly helping alongside, Cook and Ledesma out wide and Buzsaky just off Dex or Vine (when fit) I think we would be formidable! Even with a defensive midfielder we seem to struggle for command in the centre of the pitch so I would love us to try it out!!!

Describing Cerny as "ageing" is a very poor argument to have him behind Camp. He is 32. For a goalkeeper that is NOT old at all! In fact he's probably coming into his prime now.
