My, hasn't it been a frantic few days for us all. First up there was the frustration of another quiet transfer deadline day, only to be saved by the signings of Di Michele and Ilunga. Then we had Black Wednesday, the day Curbs walked and seemingly proved the rumours about our underhand board to be true. Since then we've had comment and counter-comment from Curbs, McCartney and the board, fervent speculation about who the new manager will be and scores of disillusioned fans voicing their anger on these boards.
Life is never dull for a West Ham fan.
However, I'm beginning to tire of the whole situation. Unfortunately we're in a position where no-one knows exactly what's gone on. Curbs, for example, has cited his lack of input with regards to the transfers of Ferdinand and McCartney as the main reason he left. Fair point, you could argue, but the board have countered that by saying that he was fully aware of the transfer policy this summer and couldn't make the necessary decisions. Then we had the McCartney saga. He claims there was no written transfer request, the board says there was. Granted, McCartney has nothing to gain by lying, whereas the board need the fans on their side so are bound to maintain there was a request, but although the majority of us suspect that in both cases the board are being less than honest, none of us truely know. We can speculate as much as we like, and a thousand West Ham fans will have a thousand different opinions, but the bottom line is there are only a handful of people who really know.
I think it's time to let it go. Curbs was not everyone's favourite manager, but he is an decent and principled man and deserves credit for what he did for the club, particularly in overseeing the Great Escape. There were mixed feelings too about the departures of Zamora, Ferdinand and McCartney, but they're no longer West Ham players and there's nothing anyone can do about that. There's a real danger in getting dragged down by what's happened and I for one want to start looking to the future. Ok, so we're never going to agree with the boards policies, but unfortunately football is no longer a sport but a business. We just have to support the team and get behind whoever is named as our new manager, even if it is Big Sam.
On that subject, I was encouraged by Bilic's ambiguous responses during his press conference yesterday. He seemed uneasy about the questions about West Ham which suggested that perhaps there's a chance he's considering it. If he was committed to Croatia and wasn't interested in returning to the Boleyn, that was the perfect opportunity for him to go on record and say "I do not want the West Ham job". He's certainly my choice; I think he'd bring passion, style and fight to the club and I believe there'd be a real spark about the place with him around. He's turned Croatia into genuine contenders and I for one believe he can do the same for West Ham.
In summary, in spite of who controls the club, we all love West Ham United. They are OUR club and we will be FOREVER blowing bubbles, so let's look forward to West Brom next Saturday, get another three points on the board and support whoever takes over at the helm.
