Forever Blowing Bubbles

Premier League West Ham United

My, hasn't it been a frantic few days for us all. First up there was the frustration of another quiet transfer deadline day, only to be saved by the signings of Di Michele and Ilunga. Then we had Black Wednesday, the day Curbs walked and seemingly proved the rumours about our underhand board to be true. Since then we've had comment and counter-comment from Curbs, McCartney and the board, fervent speculation about who the new manager will be and scores of disillusioned fans voicing their anger on these boards.

Life is never dull for a West Ham fan.

However, I'm beginning to tire of the whole situation. Unfortunately we're in a position where no-one knows exactly what's gone on. Curbs, for example, has cited his lack of input with regards to the transfers of Ferdinand and McCartney as the main reason he left. Fair point, you could argue, but the board have countered that by saying that he was fully aware of the transfer policy this summer and couldn't make the necessary decisions. Then we had the McCartney saga. He claims there was no written transfer request, the board says there was. Granted, McCartney has nothing to gain by lying, whereas the board need the fans on their side so are bound to maintain there was a request, but although the majority of us suspect that in both cases the board are being less than honest, none of us truely know. We can speculate as much as we like, and a thousand West Ham fans will have a thousand different opinions, but the bottom line is there are only a handful of people who really know.

I think it's time to let it go. Curbs was not everyone's favourite manager, but he is an decent and principled man and deserves credit for what he did for the club, particularly in overseeing the Great Escape. There were mixed feelings too about the departures of Zamora, Ferdinand and McCartney, but they're no longer West Ham players and there's nothing anyone can do about that. There's a real danger in getting dragged down by what's happened and I for one want to start looking to the future. Ok, so we're never going to agree with the boards policies, but unfortunately football is no longer a sport but a business. We just have to support the team and get behind whoever is named as our new manager, even if it is Big Sam.

On that subject, I was encouraged by Bilic's ambiguous responses during his press conference yesterday. He seemed uneasy about the questions about West Ham which suggested that perhaps there's a chance he's considering it. If he was committed to Croatia and wasn't interested in returning to the Boleyn, that was the perfect opportunity for him to go on record and say "I do not want the West Ham job". He's certainly my choice; I think he'd bring passion, style and fight to the club and I believe there'd be a real spark about the place with him around. He's turned Croatia into genuine contenders and I for one believe he can do the same for West Ham.

In summary, in spite of who controls the club, we all love West Ham United. They are OUR club and we will be FOREVER blowing bubbles, so let's look forward to West Brom next Saturday, get another three points on the board and support whoever takes over at the helm.

Agree with you entirely.

Must admit that I nearly choked when I got to "even if it is Big Sam." but, you are right. Whoever it is needs our support.

I have no doubt that the transfer policy was put in place in April and that Curbs knew he had to cut the wage bill but even so the players sold should have had his approval.

For many reasons being a football club supporter has changed beyond recognition in recent years and not just at West Ham.

Moreover it’s difficult to have the same feelings of loyalty when players, managers and even boards change so often. Even if players were not the best, they were ‘our’ players, now we hardly know some of the squad members.

"McCartney has nothing to gain by lying"

I have seen this on other boards and as I understand it if he hands in a written transfer request then he isn't entitled to any pay off, but if the club transfer him and he doesn't want to go then he gets some kind of payoff.

I actually think that the club are probably telling the truth regarding Linda. They have put an official statement on the website, claiming that they have the request in writing. As this is an official communication they would have to be very careful about telling lies as they could be seriously done if it could be proved that it wasn't true.

The same wouldn't apply to an ex-player making unguarded comments mouthing off to the tabloids.

I don't want to be a Duxbury apologist, but if rumours are true the board turned down bids for Ashton and Cole on deadline day and refused Citeh permission to talk to Bellamy.

If they were really just gonna sell anyone regardless in order take as much money as they could, surely they would have sold Cole for the 8+ million that Spurs reportedly offered. That is a great price for him and if they had Di Michelle in the pipeline then they had a relacement striker. It would seem that someone, Curbs, Nani or whoever didn't want to sell him as they thought he didn't want to go and the team needed him, so they refused a very good offer for the player.
