Wolstenholme

comment on the article

England's most capped amateur Gary Wolstenholme is turning professional at the age of 48.

He'll start his venture by entering the first stage of the European tour qualifying school in Scotland next week.

He's then set his sights on a place in October's Portugal Masters on the main tour.

Turning pro means Wolstenholme, who has played in five Walker Cups, will miss out on the chance to become a future Walker Cup captain.

Is turning pro worth making the sacrifice? Your thoughts please.

I've played golf with Gary, and he is not as short of the tee as everybody says. He has a wonderful short game and has the golf ball on a piece of string. He has what everybody forgets is the most importat thing in golf, a talent for getting the ball in the hole. What I mean by that is he doesn't care for playing beautiful golf or taking on flags that are hidden in corners of greens with trouble around, like so many of the young and foolish kids out there. I'm one of them! But he knows how to play within himself and play smart golf. I wish him the best and hope he does really well.

Not short?

I think the BBC's Ian Cotter, who caddied for Gary at the US Open, commented that on one particular hole where a playing partner hit the green with driver/9 iron, Wolstenholme struggled to get there with driver/driver.

You may well have played with him, Llewellyn, and I respect your observations, but what were you comparing Gary's length from the tee with?

Modern courses hosting European Tour events are likley to be just too long for him to compete. The next three years will give him grounding for competing with the Seniors, and that is what he will doubtless use the experience for.

That's right Bronty,
Gary drive and 5 wood against Eldrick's drive and 9 iron at Porthcawl. He did win though!

I thought you had to be a member of the European tour for 5 years, before you could join the Senior Tour?????

"in leicestershire there are at least twenty better players."

Hmmm. I missed that one. I am Leicestershire born and bred and still live and play golf in the county. I am really struggling to think of 20 players in the county who have represented their country at all at any level of the game, never mind 20 who have done so more than Wolstenholme - despite his advancing years there are not too many who could hold a torch to him.

Let's give the fella some credit!

Is not having enough length really a good excuse for him not turning pro long ago. Surely he could have got a coach a tweaked his technique a little bit.

Don't like the sound of all this nice guy rubbish, he sounds like a bit of a waste of space or not very bright.

It will challenge tour & relying on invites for next season, looks as though he failed to progress from first stage of the qualifying school today, by 1 shot.

302...missed by miles at Dundonald.
Euan Little finished 70,67. for -4 par good scoring on a tough course.

Incorrect, not by miles, by 1 shot.

Top 30 and ties progress to next stage, he finished T32, JUST missing out.

Cheers Godwolf...I was under the impression that only a few went on to the next stage.
Still a bit to go though!
