I think it's gone.

To be fair, we, and our Dads (and mums) and our Dad's Dads, our Dad's Dad's Dads, and so on have had a pretty solid centuary of football we could call our own.

Gone now though.

With all respect to the City of Manchester boys, their take over is almost THE suffocating cement on the problem.

It's gone now.

Used to be a player gave a toss for the club - gone.

Used to be a team would dominate for no more than 2 years (check the records before the Liverpool team of the 80s) - gone.

It's also kind of gutting when you start to get a settled promising side and the "Titans" come in and just take what they want leaving you almost at square one.

If Modric is class, no doubt someone will have him too, and if Corluka pulls up trees he'll be off to Milan, or Madrid.

Meh.

You have to wonder what the point is sometimes.

I know Spurs have taken players from lower league teams, but it's always been like that, the terrific pyramid of the English game was built on it, but would a Hoddle stay at Spurs for 90% of his career today? - Nah.

I don't blame United for wanting Berbatov, I don't even blame them for making it public (if they did?!!?!?), sign of the times, but I do mind paying more than any one else outside Chelsea and Arse to watch my side, get my hopes up, only to watch them raped.

There's almost no point even dreaming of success anymore unless you have a backer with the might of City's, or the pull of the tradition of a United or a Liv etc

I fear for football, I fear for my team.

I actually fear for the pyramid.

I reckon it's gone.

Still, a hundred years of memories for us all - worth something.

I hope.

THFC.

The difference now, 'middleagedred' is that not only is the best talent being picked up by the top clubs but ALL OF IT.

Anyone with a shred of ability is hoovered up and if they're lucky, they are given the 'educational opportunity' of warming the bench.

There goes the excellent Man City youth academy.

I've nothing against teams breaking into the "top 4" but like others I'm asking where it'll all end. When 1 team was not prepared to be outbid (Chelsea), we all knew where we stood; now we have 2 teams we bottomless pockets and the fear is that some already rich Spanish club will be getting £150m for an average player just because massively wealthy chairmen don't know when to give up the ghost.
Also, I can't help wondering what'll happen when it all goes pear shaped (as it did in Italy a few years ago).

Yes "legiti greig" you are right the top clubs are more voracious than ever in their appetite for top talent but only 11 players can play with a handful more on the bench at any Club. Look at Duff, SWP, Crouch, Butt, NevilleP, Ben Haim, Sidwell, Hoyte,A Smith : All good home-grown players that were "hoovered" up by the top4 and are now playing elsewhere in the PL. I am not debating that point that the gap between top, middle and bottom is wider than ever, or that the PL has gone global - just that top dumping on rest is nothing new..

The new thing though is how much dumping is being done. And it's hitting the fan. (Sorry, I can't help with the c**p jokes.)

The demise of professional football. No one shows up to even mid-table Prem games now.

I've had enough of any big 4. The article is spot on.

The football league will reign again, 3 tight divisions, (some if not most) players that do give a toss for the team and some local identity!

The thing is that it was always going to happen once the blackburn takeover happened all the years ago....... i admit a bit sad!

It’s OK for Spurs to take players from lower league teams, but not for bigger teams to take Spurs players? Talk about double standards.

What about the lower league club hoping to build a team around their promising midfielder and push for promotion only for Spurs to buy him and rain on their parade. Where is the difference?

You need to realise that the big clubs have always taken what they want and that is how they maintain the PL hierarchy. Similarly Spurs take their pick of lower league players to ensure that they maintain the League hierarchy.
