Keegan expresses Owen fears

comment on the article

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is hopeful striker Michael Owen will sign a new deal but has admitted that every player has his price.

Owen, 28, is out of contract next summer and Keegan said: "I don't think any player is untouchable, that's the first thing I have got to say.

"That's not to say in any way, shape or form that we want to see Michael Owen leave this club."

Do you think Owen will sign a new deal or do you think he will leave the club?

I understand that his record against time at the club is poor, but when he plays he does well. Obviously he gets paid too much and the management is being stupid for giving him a pay rise, but i think if we are to keep this quality player then we unfortunatley have to go against moral reasoning and accept maybe he is being selfish.

However, even if he is selfish than at least when he does play he delivers, more than the well paid Boumsong, Bogarde, Kewell at Liverpool, Corradi and Shevchenko... ever did.

And how are injuries his fault? That one in the WC was a freak injury and kept him out for a season and last season he was in and out of the team but still managed 11 league goals, which is more than Saha did who is apparently better in some peoples eyes?

Newcastle owners aren't the best people in the world, but neither are quite a lot of other club owners, Roman "manages the team" Abrohamovich, the americans at Liverpool can't work with anyone, Milan Manderic, Kenwright, and Thakshin and Cook "no more relagation" at City.

i dont understand why keegan and the fans think owen will stay. he is so much better than the club but is fighting for fitness at the moment.

in hindsight he made the biggest mistake of his life moving from his boyhood club liverpool.

the only reason he moved to newcastle was:
a) he was offered a huge contract
b) nobody else wanted him

hopefully when he gets fit and stays fit the big clubs will be after him.

Newcastle simply shouldn't have signed him on a three-year deal. If you're willing to pay £17m for someone then it you should have a 5 year deal, or a 4 deal with the option for a further year if possible.

Obviously at the time it was a major coup for them to get him, but they now risk losing Owen for nothing after investing £27m in him for just two seasons effort (/32m for 3 years). And that's before you even take into account the fact that he has only been fit (for whatever reason) for only two-thirds of the time.

If I was michael owen I would hang my boots up and become a pundit or something like that he needs to hang his boots up I have defended this player more times than that he has had a great carrer but I think its time to move on now, I watched him play Saturday and he just looked so unfit and didnt look hungry like the old Michael Owen we all know? He had been dropped from the England team and rightly so.

let him go, for god's sake, get rid of him, and bring in a couple of younger, fitter players who will actually last a season.....
I think it's a disgrace that the club offers him MORE money when he hasn't put played a whole season for the club since he joined-what value for money has he given, what value has he added to the club? If they offer him a new contract, then it should be on a pay as you play basis, and after all of the money he's had out of Newcastle, he should be grateful, and humbly accept it.
Have the younger players been able to learn anything from him? Probably not, given his fitness "issues"...get rid of him, and let him try to resurrect his England career somewhere else where they're prepared to gamble on his fitness...

Owen doesn't want to be at the club. Moreover, why Newcastle pay him well over 100 grand a week is beyond me. The guy is totally past it, his body isnt up to it anymore. It appears all the top prem league managers know it, and Capello too, but people like the newcastle board, keegan and the english media are completely blind to it.

Personnaly i think owen was a massive waste of time and money for newcastle. When we signed him we looked at his career and saw his constantly hitting goals into the back of the net. Being a toon fan this is very dissapointing for he has not been there for a lot of the games and even when he is there he plays like he hasnt slept for a week. Its about time that we stood up against our keegan and told them enough is enough we need young spirit not grandpa's just take a quick look at arsnal and see how well they do with players who havnt even made a name in the football carrers yet but its young spitit that matters. Its also about time we stood up againt mike ashley and tell him to let kevin have more control over the club i.e. young strategic signings and not to just worry about money the whole time.

All you Newcastle fans are dreaming if you think Owen will stay, why would he? He wants to play for a contender. With better players around him he would regain his form and score more goals. A previous comment mentioned his move from Liverpool being his undoing, I couldn't agree more; coming back to Newcastle from Real Madrid was another major blunder, although, getting out of his Madrid contract was his priority. Unless Michael leaves Newcastle I feel his International career is over, and that would be sad. He must realize this also. Other than Liverpool, Man city or even Pompey would be a good fit.
