We still need a central defender

Championship Birmingham City

Isn't it ironic that despite having two iconic central defenders as manager recently, neither of them have been able to sort out the centre of defence?

If McLeish had been able to sign a quality central defender (or two) in the January window I am convinced that we would still be in the premiership. When Schmitz was playing I actually would have preferred Bruce or McLeish despite their years.

Now that Balde has turned the Blues down McLeish has got to as a matter of urgency find someone or we are looking at the unedifying sight of Ridgewell plus either Jaidi or Martin Taylor all year. We may just about get away with it against Barnsley but will struggle against some of the better Championship teams. We will score goals but how many will we concede?

There must be someone out there......any ideas Blues fans?

As you say had we signed a decent central defender in January we would probably still be in the PL.
McLiesh worries me, it is clear that this position needs to be filled by a quality player and he goes for Balde.
I wonder how his mind works sometimes...

We have all said the the same thing now for weeks and weeks reference central defenders!! We have done a Cahill with Balde again!. We never seem to learn at the blues. For last few season our managers have over looked our defence which has cost us our premiership status twice now! So when will we learn?? I m totally fed up with the whole thing!steam as for for ideas for new CB's Primus on loan and Chris Riggott, Gabbidon, Anyone we can get now and we are running out of time fast to get anyone decent.

Matthew Upson!

Ever since we sold him for about £5m we have never replaced him. What happened to that £5m? The only defender we've spent may be half of that on his Ridgewell, but why have we not bought a £5m defender yet.

Come on board, this sale was about 18 months ago. Get your money out and replace Upson.

The sight of Martin Taylor accelerating with the pure explosion of power of a oil tanker is enough to make anyone fancy their chances against our defense.
We have had some OK looking youngsters (Sam Oji) at the back that didnt quite make it into the team (anyone know why?).
Certainly for me, this conversation was taking place WHILST we had Upsom because for one and a hlaf seasons he was either injured or too busy looking to move elsehwere. We certainly never recovered from losing him to injury and King Kenny to old age.
Jaidi can hack it at Championship level, as can Ridgewell, but Taylor should have been sold to Norwich when they came knocking last season.
In Carsley we should have a player that will help fill the experience gap in the middle, perhaps we can get one for the back too?
Failing that, perhaps if we could pick up someone like Gabbidon or Dawson on loan to perm we'd be in good shape for Championship.
I'm sure there's a Scottish CB out there somewhere that Big Eck's got his eye on - David Weir anybody? smiley

i mentioned not so long ago that Sonko from reading might be a good shout... i wasnt aware (yet it was pointed out by another forum user) that he had recently signed anew deal with reading... so what does he do with that new deal at reading? rip it up and sign for Stoke???? why? he wants premiership football obviously but stoke?

do contracts seriously mean nothing (i.e. James Milner... 4 year contract signed last year.. and on his bike to villa)

but still i suppose we could actually sign David Weir lol
