Magners Play Off

MagnersLeague

It's been announced that the Magners League is to have a play off format next season (2009/10.) Although it keeps the teams/fans intrested longer, I think it devalues the actual achievement of finishing top.

Yeah Munster. I DO go on a bit. Must be me dotage! I'll get used to 'em (playoffs). I suppose. Have to.

Strongly considering not renewing my Season ticket for next year, though. The moving of matches to awkward days and times is killing it for me. Shame really. It's probably why I rant so much at the Corpo's - if I'm honest.

There's only one for it. Back to Dublin for me after 25 years! Having said that, I don't like my town as much anymore. Love my tribe. It's just that it has lost its' soul to the corporate goal. Jayzuz, Gibson's "off on one" again. Bless. doh

Cork maybe. I love it there. Do you happen to know of any decent rugby teams in the area? I need me aul rugby, like. smiley

Have a great weekend Munster. ok

Mr. Gibson,

There is no good rugby in Cork (I jest Deaglan, if you read this).

What times are the Leinster games on at? I didn't think they were anything terrible, but I suppose if your flying in from the Orange country, I suppose the times are seen in a different light.

Have a fantastic weekend yourself!

Yeah I think that it is true that play-offs devalue finishing top of the table. But maybe it would be better if there was a trophy for finishing top of the league and a trophy for winning the Play-offs?

there should be something like in the NRL with a minor premiership and a major premiership so if you win the final and if you win the regular league you get recognised either way.

I see there is a money aspect to this - it is after all a professional game and it calls the shorts unfortunately but the introduction of the playoffs is the same as for the GP to allow the teams that were understrength because of international call-ups to have a crack at it with the full strength sides. What's wrong with that?

Exile,
That's the EXACT problem my friend. Can't you see it?

I don't understand why there has been so much negativity towards playoffs from RU fans. they provide a superb spectactle as teams have to increase the intensity and step up a level as they are putting their seasons on the line.

It's all very well winning games in the league when you know that you can make up for losing the following week, but putting players in an environment where they have to win when their whole season is on the line will show who has the ability and nerve to perform when they really have to, which is what true champion teams and players are able to do. This is why IMO playoffs are a better way of determining the champions.

I think that the idea of a play off will boost the tail-end of the season. At the moment we seem to get to Feb and there is nothing to play for. The European placings are fixed in place so theres nothing too much at stake that way, if there is someone at the top with a big lead there is nothing to play for that way. Throw in a 4-way play off and suddenly we hav a league that is competitive all the way to the finish. Now all we need is something to jazz up the begining of the season so we don't go over a month before any of the big players emerging from their summer cocoon

Lets be honest, this was needed. The Magners league as a competition is seriously devalued during Autumn international matches/ World Cups and the Six Nations as a high proportion of the players are away with their national sides. This allows sides to pick themselves up and aim for something after an international series.

I agree with TopHiggs that there should effectively be 2 awards. League Champion for the top of the table and League Cup? for the playoff winner. It seems to lack natural justice that the team that emerges top over the season can be denied Champion status on performance over 2 one off games.
