Curbishley's Squad Thinning to Backfire?

Premier League West Ham United

So it looks as though Anton Ferdinand is off to Sunderland, pending a medical. £8m is the proposed fee, and on paper it looks a decent bit of business for a player who the fans don't really get on with and who has been the source of some backroom unrest over the past few years. It's another example of Curbishley's need to thin out the massive first-team squad we have at the Boleyn

But with James Collins, Danny Gabbidon, George McCartney, James Tompkins and Jonathan Spector (plus others I'm bound to have forgotten) out injured, Matthew Upson notoriously injury-prone (although he's fit at the moment) and Calum Davenport looking like a bit of a donkey, has Curbishely sold the wrong players? And if he is planning to bring in another centre-half, who's he thinking of going after? An unknown European? An unproven defender from the Fizzy Pop league? A Premier League fringe player who was never quite good enough to break into the team?

It's not looking good at the back for the Irons this year, and it could lead to another relegation battle.

I honestly think Keane has lost the plot. He famously stated that Rio was lazy and only played for 20 minutes a game (to paraphrase) while he was a player at Man.U. and then signs his brother who is undoubtedly lazier and goes missing for far longer periods.

As for West Ham, I feel this is shewed business. Not only have we gained some potential spending money but we've freed up some of the wage budget. Anton was mor than likely in the top tier of earners at WH and for a player who wasn't that good that isn't financially sound.

I won't miss A.F. He rode on his brother coat tails for a long time and fooled a lot of folks for longer. Maybe Keane can shape him into a real player but I doubt it.

West Ham are not a Yo-Yo club. We have been out of the premier league for 2 seasons out of 11. Relegated once. We were briefly in Yo-Yo mode at the beginning of the 90's, but that was a long time ago.

babyfacedassasin2 - fair enough, I see what you're saying regarding Tevez. My main annoyance is the 'he kept them up single-handed' line trotted out too often, which does a disservice to other players in that team.

Is he under 21 or 23, the article contradicts
itself.

Tevez did keep West Ham up at Sheffield Utd's expense. The FA should have docked West Ham 3 points over the Tevez transfer and not fine them 5.5 million pounds. The FA only did that as they thought West Ham were gonna get relegated and felt it wouldn't have been fair on West Ham. What a load of rubbish, they had the opportunity to make an example of them but they bottled it.

Why 3 points? Oh look, how convenient, it would have been the exact amount that would have ended up relegating them. Never mind that there has only ever been a history of 1 or 2 points deductions before!

This has all been done to death before, bore off will you.

Badger,

I agree that it has been done to death but the 1 or 2 points is not correct.

There has been an history of 3 point deductions & it was suggested by many before the end of season, when West Ham had still 10 points to make on the Blades.

If fact it was suggested by a leading redtop in January when the Hammers were still insisting they owned Tevez.

Anyway, I am looking forward to battling it out on the pitch next season, where it should happen. As long as you manage to survive the drop without Carlos, of course. football

Sorry ytt, you're wrong. Many of your Blade colleagues (particularly Exiled Blade, who was quite generous in his admission of being incorrect on the same matter) admitted this on these boards several months ago. Here is a copy of my post, feel free to check the facts out yourself.

'Here we go:

73/74 Preston 1 point
73/74 Newport 1 point
74/75 Aldershot 1 point
81/82 Bristol Rovers 2 points
81/82 Mansfield 2 points
82/83 Blackpool 2 points
87/88 Halifax 1 point
05/06 Bury 1 point

There have only been specific points penalties above that level for financial irregularities e.g. club going voluntarily into administration, or for failing to fulfil a fixture, but for player issues that's the list. Even fighting on the pitch (Arsenal, Man Utd) and spectator control (Brighton) has only ever had a max. of 2 points.'

Notwithstanding that, as I've also posted many times, I know a few of your lot, so there's no issues between West Ham and Sheff U as far as I'm concerned.
