The Ryder Cup 2008

comment on the article

Right guys. Enough of all this talk about a particular player over all these different threads and their form. Right here right now. Who are your 2 European Wild Card picks and why?

Its really tough this year. Much more so than 2 years ago, but Im going to go with my head more than my heart on this one because I feel justice must be done.

That being said I am going with Darren Clarke based on current form and his good Ryder Cup record. My other pick is Justin Rose because after his high ranking over the last couple of years and his good performance in some of the majors, I feel deserves a shot although in saying that, he doesnt win much at all.

Consistency against flare. Its so hard to say what is best.

And if I was going with my heart it would be Monty as he is a safe bet to perform. Those words wouldnt normally fall in the same sentence as Colin's name, but when it comes to the Ryder Cup, he's just a different player. Sadly though, I dont think his record in this event even justifies a spot this year after how awful he has been and it would be wrong to deprive one of the young golfing credentials we have in Europe the right to show that they to were a safe bet if only given the chance.

I would also love to see what Poulter would do and I believe he would be a real entertainer. Again though, the likable English lad for all his character and flare, just isnt the best of what is available in any stats. If he got a spot though, I guess deep down it would bring a smile to my face.

Lets have it boys. 2 picks and your reasons for them.

I cant wait until Valhalla...

1st Pick - Clarke, why? he is on the button form wise, him & Westwood can beat anybody they are a natural pairing.

2nd Pick - Poulter, long straight and solid short game and has the attitude to soak up anything the crowd throw at him.

p.s Poluter had to play in the US to meet the minimumn 15 events on the PGA tour otherwise u loose card - and no player is going to miss out on the millions on the US tour.

Faldo should not pick Monty.
If he does and Monty loses, Europe are down one and Monty will be devastated - not a good way to end his Ryder career.
If he does not, Monty will just continue to grump on as usual - no harm done.

you think he should pick monty?? you are dreaming! for me it is simple - its 2 from 4.

Rose
Clarke
Poulter
Casey

its a tough choice between these 4!

Rose is the definition of solid but i have questions about his match play

Poulter has played IMO consistently the best out of those 4 over the course of this season, but he could crack under pressure!

Casey is known as one of the world's best match players and was great for europe 2 years ago but is not playing as well atm as other candidates.

Clarke - not had the best of seasons but has hit form at the perfect time and is usually reliable.

personally i'd go for Casey and Rose but i wouldn't be disappointed with any two from those 4.

Why are you considering Rose for a wild card?

Correct me if I am wrong but for Rose not to qualify automatically he would have to be overtaken by 3 out of the following: Hansen, Wilson, Kaymer, Fisher and Dougherty. I fancy his chances of getting in automatically!!

Therefore that would leave Faldo with a choice of 2 from 3 and since Poulter has decided not to bother qualifying automatically then the decision is basically made for Faldo.

Clarke and Casey

I would go for DC and Paul Casey. Casey has a better match play record than JR I would say. JR isnt a team player. Sorry about that, because I am a big fan too.

Colin Montgomery (if it wasn for me, you wouldnt be here, just remember that) makes me sick. He has tried to talk and bully himself into a position. He is not a gentleman, not a sportsman and not only would i not pick him for the RC team, there is no way he should ever captain an RC team. With his condescending behaviour towards his partners in previous RCs i cant ever imagine him inspiring anyone to do a good job. I could see one or two of the players telling him where to get off. He is a selfish limelight grabbing grumpy rich old fart and he didnt sink the putt that won the last ryder cup.

But to answer your question, DC and probably Paul Casey.

PS, he will fit in with the R&A well though.

If Monty is in with a shout of a pick based purely on his Ryder cup record then surely Neil Coles + Tony Jacklin should also be considered?

BMACO1981 you forgot Brian Barnes!
Unfortunately Monty is huffing and puffing on his previous record. Let's move on unless he can prove that he is still capable at Gleneagles this week-end.
Daren Clarke has come good, Justin Rose still has to prove that he has the bottle - critical for matchplay. Poulter has a genuine reason for choosing US this week and plays well on big occasions. I feel sorry for Casey and Pettersen but form AND experience have to count and Poulter and Clarke fit this.

For a long time before he finally retired Seve carried a fragile back and unreliable technique with a heart of a lion. Since Monty lost his game, a game that anyone with a heart would have won several majors instead of crumbling and finding a way to lose and blame it on anybody but himself, Monty has been the antipathy of a champion. I agree with NeilSkehel, I wouldn,t pick him for the team and he wouldn't be captain because he has no bottle and he his an obnoxious individual.
