Swansea City 2 - 1 Hull Cityby Badfinger_Taffy (U2169089) 25 August 2008
The Swans progressed to the 3rd round of the Carling Cup for the first time in 26 years when they beat Premiership outfit Hull City AFC by 2 goals to 1 after extra time. The Tigers took the lead after a Dean Windass goal on 11 mins however the Swans then scored with a Gorka Pintado glancing header past Matt Duke for a 63rd-minute equaliser. Jordi Gomez's extra-time penalty sealed the win after Michael Turner's foul on Shaun MacDonald and secured a place in the next round.
This will be the first meeting between the clubs since 2004 when The Tigers won 3-2 at Swansea in a div 3 game. That season Hull did the double over the Swans and gained promotion to League 1 (Div 2), and a season later they were in the Championship. In the first round of the Carling Cup Swansea beat League 2’s Brentford at the Liberty Stadium thanks to a goal in each half from Shaun MacDonald. Manager Roberto Martinez had made 10 changes to the team that lost 2-0 at Charlton on the opening game of the season for that game and since then the Swans have beaten Forest 3-1 at home and Plymouth Argyle 1-0 away in the league. Hull started the season with a worthy 3 points at home to Fulham, having fallen behind to an 8th minute strike from Ki-Hyeon they then scored one For Hull to be in the Premier League is a massive achievement, and for us to be in the Championship with the squad we've got is remarkable Swansea Manager ROBERTO Martinez in each half from Geovanni (22) and Folan (81) to win 2-1. On Saturday they travelled to Ewood Park where they drew 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers, after the game Hull boss Phil Brown said "I'm ecstatic with a point. If we continue with that passion, drive, commitment, togetherness, we'll be OK.” This will also be a welcome home for Swansea old boy Sam Ricketts who played 103 games for the Swans between 2004 and 2006 and scored 3 goals.Past Stats Wins Swansea 27 (94 goals) Hull 22 (79 goals) Draws 14 Head to Head English Division Three 12.04.2004 Swansea City 2-3 Hull City 30.09.2003 Hull City 1-0 Swansea City 03.05.2003 Swansea City 4-2 Hull City 28.09.2002 Hull City 1-1 Swansea City 01.03.2002 Swansea City 1-0 Hull City 22.09.2001 Hull City 2-1 Swansea City 26.02.2000 Swansea City 0-0 Hull City 18.09.1999 Hull City 2-0 Swansea City 08.05.1999 Swansea City 2-0 Hull City 19.12.1998 Hull City 0-2 Swansea City 17.01.1998 Swansea City 2-0 Hull City 30.08.1997 Hull City 7-4 Swansea City 11.01.1997 Hull City 1-1 Swansea City 28.09.1996 Swansea City 0-0 Hull City For the first time in my stats I will be using Compubet, used to aid book makers in planning odds. Indywales (U12251382) posted Aug 27, 2008 Pintado won MOTM award but Radio Wales commentators suggested it very close and possibly Shaun MacDonald deserved it more. From what I heard on commentary, MacDonald run his heart out and played well. Its great to see competition for first a team start.

Badfinger_Taffy (U2169089) posted Aug 28, 2008 The other thing to consider is that we have no JPT and we enter the FA Cup in round 3and of course no FAW Cup. The opportunity to play fringe players will be limited, so the longer we can stay in each of the cups the better. We have some talented guys sat on the bench and some that don't even get to put their kit on, every player needs to fight for his place and cup games are ideal for them to prove to Roberto that they can make the starting 11.

Monmouth Swan (U10907924) posted Aug 28, 2008 I've missed the full sp as I was in devon. From what I have read, Gorka had a Corka. We need a penalty taker though; perhaps Gomez or Scotland always has to be available!
