Wanjiru Takes Marathon Glory

Sammy Wanjiru won Kenya's first ever gold medal in the men's marathon, breaking the Olympic record despite the soaring heat in Beijing.

Wanjiru, who was among the leading pack which set a phenomenal early pace, pulled away in the final miles to win in 2:06:32.

Morocco's Jaouad Gharib won silver, trailing by 84 seconds, while Ethiopian Tsegay Kebede took bronze after ovetaking team-mate Deriba Merga with 200m to go.

Dan Robinson, Britain's only representative, finished just outside a PB in 24th place.

This was one of the most amazing marathon races I have ever seen.

Incredible stuff from that leading pack. To do a half marathon in 62 minutes in those conditions is sensational.

Some of that leading pack dropped out after sustaining injuries due to the pace they were going at.

What was your opinion on the marathon? Did Wanjiru deserve to win? Was it one of, if not the best, marathon you have seen?

Great runner, but not sure about his teeth. If he'd been Chinese, they'd have brought someone else in to mime his run while he did the heavy breathing off-route.

That's not just quick.
That's an insane gamble.

I wonder if Wanjiru would have tried something like that if HGS was fit and running.

And is anybody else surprised that Lel had no better response to the fast pace?

Though, well done, of course, to Wanjiru, Gharib, and Kebede.

Anybody else feeling a bit inspired for a run?

There were already few more joggers than usual this morning as I strolled to the tube at sunrise...

Hi Richard, haven't seen you on these boards since the marathon?

How have you been mate? Training hard as usual I presume.

I was watching the marathon and was astoished at how long they kept that unbelieveable pace.

I'm not sure if Wanjiru would have gone as quick if HGS was running but I think the OR still would have gone.

I would go for a run but I'm currently recovering from standing on a plug! Should be able to run within the next week hopefully.

Hiya, Golden,

I've been diving in and out, but life in the BBC Sport offices will always require you to be a jack of all trades with the football, cricket, Euro 2008, Wimbledon, quite a lot of work on F1 (and a bit of basketball) this season...

No, no real jogging, one or two 5-milers each week, trying to use gym-time to put on a bit of muscle.

I'll stick my neck out and say Wanjiru would have been a bit more conservative if somebody like HGS was in the pack, but then he didn't slow down with Lel around, so who knows?

Sounds painful about the plug, hope the run goes well. ok

To be honest, I only saw the first half-hour of the race (before bed), and the result / report this morning - what were the highlights?

When did Wanjiru pull away or the others fade?
Specifically, did there seem a moment when the race looked in the bag for Wanjiru or did the pace he set always make his lead look vulnerable?

And, as a marathon is always the best way to see a city (IMHO), what did Beijing look like to you?

Wanjiru set a great pace and performed well despite all the naysayers. Congratulations my guy, we're proud of you.

Wanjiru has immense amount of natural talent. He started running at the age of 13 and at 15 he had his first race in which he won and attained scholarship to a higschool in Japan where he has always lived and trained.Martin Lel did not perfom well because he had typhoid and malaria in mid july and missed training for two weeks after treatment he went to Italy from kenya and tried to catch up on his training but did not attain 100% fitness ,he was about 70% fit on the marathon day,so i guess he did well.He is eager to run either chicago or new york to make up for dissappointment .
