Saints fined after salary cap breach

Super League

St Helens have been fined £8,456 after being found guilty of a minor salary cap breach during the 2007 season.

But for the first time in two years no clubs have been summoned before the Rugby Football League's Operational Rules Tribunal.

Saints' fine is equal to the sum by which they breached the finite salary cap limit of £1.6m.

National League One side Leigh Centurions have also been fined £5,000 following a minor misconduct.

Do you think this is a real sign that the RFL's policing of the game is producing genuine improvements with regard to finances?

Saints breach was obiviously a small one but it is the 4th time so this needs taking into account as well. Maybe the fine could have been doubled?

Nice to see Wigan getting our books in order!!

I think the comparsion to breaking the speedlimit is an intersting one, this offence is clearly the equivant of being a couple of mph over the limit which, on its own, deserves a minimal punishment. however this is the 4th time this as happened in a short time so i would accept ifi t were me 'driving' that pnishment would be increased. i am not saying saints need huuge points deduction but i do think super league need to take slighly more action.

As for the notion tha tthe salary cap is somehow illegal, well i am sure the clubs have lwyers farmore qualified than me or anyone on these boards to make such judgments. but my understanding was that they are not prevnting a business rom operating as they choose what they are saying is that if you want to operate wuithin this particular competition you must obey these rulkes, there is nothing to stop a club refusing to obey the cap ,and breaking away from the league,he reality however is that would obviously be suicide due to the lack of tv revenue etc.

It would then be a restraint of trade, theres nothing legally the rfl can do to stop a club picking 17 eu and no british players either if a club in the sl wanted to pay a player £5,000,000 a year and could afford to do so who the rfl to stop them

Another armchair lawyer JB erm All clubs have agreed to abide by the rules and regulations laid down by the RFL, including the salary cap. So stop talking nonsense about restraint of trade etc. Please. biggrin

Salary cap--its been happening, defaulters. It will continue to be used,Maybe there will continue to be defaulters.
The salary cap is as much part of the operating rules as 13 men on the pitch.End of debate.

By the way i wasnt suggesting that for minor offences that loss of home field advantage should be considered,so i hope Saints fans dont think that is a axe being ground.

As regards its effect on a clubs forward plan, then i guess it would keep them honest if they mess suffficent for it to be considered and are presumptive enough to budget for such an event.

Im not saying I agree with it BB but if a club wants to pay a player £5,000,000 a year and decided to take the RFL court legally the rfl wouldn't have a leg to stand on, you don't need to be a lawyer to work that 1 out.

all the clubs agree with the salary cap as they know it will protect the long term future of the game.
look how successful gridiron, basketball, baseball, and ice hockey are in the usa mostly due to the salary cap producing even matched teams creating more interest in the games themselves.

Precisely H1895, I would imagine the courts would simply say "You agreed by these rules in the first place" Sport can and will govern itself.
