Women's Boxing for 2012?

It is about time that women's boxing was part of the Olympics. It's been around as sport for a long time now and it isn't fair that only men should be able to contest in the event. There still aren't enough women participating in the Olympics, despite the coverage of all events regardless of gender being more fair than is the state of sport coverage outside of the Olympics. Only football, rugby and cricket for men get coverage as a norm. Now, I'm no feminist, but things need to change and I think that not having women's boxing in the Olympics epitomises the perception of women in sports. How can people say "I don't want to watch women fight!"? What the hell is the difference to watching men fight!?!

I don't want to watch women box.

They can compete in the rest of the martial arts, it is just boxing is different.

I don't think any other than boxing has the ultimate objective of knocking out your opponent. It's just not appropriate for women.

(waits for storm of abuse)

Hey, just my opinion alright?

As much as it wouldn't be watched by the masses, or by the traditional boxing fans, its 2008, its about time women had the chance to compete for honours in the amateur game.

In the last two years I have seen a huge increase in the amount of girls, particularly juniors, joining amateur clubs and participating in gym shows all around London. In four years times, will London fail these young athletes of will it give them a place on the stage to show there abilities to the world??????

Letting girls box in 2012 would really define what the London Olympics was all about.

Womens boxing is at least 20 years away from being considered a sport. The standard of womens boxing is pathetically poor at the moment.

While women's boxing is not featured in the Olympics, it is a part of other sports tournaments, including the South East Asian Games. Up until a few years ago, I shared the sentiments of many of the commentators - I just did not think that women and boxing went together. However, for the last year and a half I have been training in a gym in Baguio City, in the north of the Philippines, where the Philippine national women's boxing team also trains. Seeing the dedication of these girls to boxing, their level of fitness, and how damn well they fight when they get into the ring for sparring, changed my whole perspective.
I had the immense pleasure of seeing my gym-mates off to the SEA games in Thailand last year, and felt as pround as punch when one of them came back with a gold medal.
These girls deserve a place in the Olympics. Of that I now have no doubt at all.

Agreed.
No reason why women's boxing shouldn't be part of the Olympics.
For a start the amateur fighters are already heavily protected and women already compete at the much tougher professional level.
If they can compete in all the other full contact sports it's crazy and backward to exclude them from boxing at the games.
