Tim Brabants celebrates winning gold

So there it is - Olympic gold medal number 18, courtesy of Dr Tim Brabants in the K1 1000m final, the third top podium finish at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park.
news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/oly...

The 31-year-old dominated the race, leading from start to finish to clinch Great Britain's first ever canoeing Olympic gold medal.

And he could add to his haul on Saturday when he competes in the K1 500m final.

A thoroughly well deserved gold for the man from Walton-on-Thames. Let us know your thoughts here.

Absolutely brilliant. Where does he practice?
Why do you say he is a 'qualified' doctor? Isn't
'qualified' redundant?

AndrewFR - just looking back over your previous comments on other 606's. Good lord man, what have you got against Britain doing well in any sport? I know you say you don't give a stuff about canoeing, sailing, bmx etc on one of your previous posts, but there are plenty of people who do. So stick to your footy and stop wee weeing on everyone else’s fireworks!

Andrew FR what a very sad person you are. I feel quite sorry for you! Perhaps you belong on the football terraces chanting abuse or just slouched in your armchair with a pile of empty beer cans at your hand. Whatever, you certainly aren't someone with a very positive view of life. And certainly not someone who'd bother to get off their backside and encourage our young people everywhere to get involved in life through sport. I'm sure Tim Brabants success will encourage many, many others into kayaking and hopefully the success of our swimmers, cyclists, rowers, sailors and others will do the same for their sports. You, on the other hand, seem destined for a rather myopic and disappointing future as an armchair cynic. I know what I'd rather be.

Dave Cuthill at FCC in Scotland - you're quite right. I know Tim's success will encourage many others into canoeing - though whether they enjoy the sensation of sinking on Tim's neighbourhood regatta course at Nottingham is another question of course!

Tim trains twice a day, nearly every day. He misses out on parties and get togethers because he needs to train. He misses out on things like Christmas with his family, because he needs to train. 16 odd years, with his friends all able to go out drinking, knowing that if he were to drink a few, he would be underperforming for 5 weeks - think about that when you see footballers clubbing a couple of days before a match.

He also found time to train as a medical doctor. Brains as well as brawn.

For years, his rewards were B finals, 8th place finishes, disappointment...but he kept going and going, with utter belief and the knowledge that the best things don't come through shortcuts, they require hard work, grit, guts, and consumate professionalism.

After years, the results started coming, A finals, podium finishes.....

He broke the world record in Athens, and then finished 5th in the final - a great result, but not enough for a winner. Was it time to call it a day ? Accept it's not going to happen ? No way said Tim.

Instead he worked even harder, he took on a second event too - the 500m, and he's been doing brilliantly in that one as well. European Champion, World Champion...

His gold finally came today, the thing he has worked so hard for, for so many long years. Has he a right to be happy ? Have those who support him a right to celebrate ? You better believe it.

Tim Brabants, World and Olympic Champion, couldn't happen to a nicer guy and a true role model for sporting success.

I hope this inspirational man does inspire people to take the sport on and UK sport to fund it a bit more. We could have a full quota in the Kayaking and the canoeing come 2012, with Dr Brabants leadind the way. if chris Hoy is to be knighted then this man deserves the same honour.

Well done Tim. We are very proud of you - you would be surprised the number of people who have come up to me and asked "was that your nephew?" and I proudly said yes. It was great watching you live every morning in spite of having to get up at 3 a.m. A great achievement for England.biggrin
