Olympics - Day 14

comment on the article

Fabulous Friday?

That's frankly fairly feeble alliteration but let's hope it proves to be the case today for third-placed Team GB.

Such lofty heights were unexpected at the outset but they'll want to cling on having come so gloriously far.

Yet Russia - just one gold behind GB at the start of day 14 - are breathing down their necks like Jack the Ripper's nastier big brother at the end of a dark, isolated East End alley.

Fear not though. Because a host of blood-thirsty British stars are stampeding over the horizon with a crazed look in their eyes, absolutely desperate to save the day by getting amongst the 21 gold medals on offer today. Here are your ones to watch out for:

TIM BRABANTS
He's a qualified doctor and what better remedy could be found than gold in the flatwater kayaking event. Brabants (pictured), the 2007 world champion, takes part in the K1 1000m event but reigning Olympic champion Veraas Larsen sits in the next lane.

DAVID PRICE
The colossal Scouser is tough as old boots and proved so when he stopped super-heavyweight favourite Russia's Islam Timurziev in the first round after two viciously effective attacks. Is guaranteed bronze but, having not been truly tested in Beijing thus far, will be desperate to win his semi-final and land himself a gold chance.

SHANAZE READE
Do we need to give her the big build up again? After her BMX final was rained off yesterday, it is no gamble to say the young world champion will be absolutely itching to get out there and tear up the track. Will be disappointed with anything but gold.

JAMES DEGALE
DeGale, aka 'Chunky', is a cocky cockney with the skill to back up the big mouth. A quick mover, who glides in then out on his opponents like a bee moving in for the killer sting, DeGale is guaranteed bronze but will have to beat Darren John Sutherland (who has a 4-1 record over him) to get an upgrade.

KATY LIVINGSTON
World bronze medallist Livingston has every chance in the women's modern pentathlon, which takes place throughout the morning and afternoon in Beijing. Also won a World Cup event in Cairo this year so has decent form to speak of coming into the biggest sporting event in the world.

Here's a bit more detail on Cool Britannia's medal hopes for you:

Just thought I'd thank all you guys for keeping me in touch with the olympic action while I'm on holiday in California. To be frank the coverage of the event in this part of the world is rubbish, even for USA dominated events. The best way to find out what has been going on has been to use the live action blog. I'm on my way home tomorrow but I think I'll miss the last events. Better planning is going ot be required for the next one. i.e. dont be in America!

Many medals have been robbed by the host, especially at gymnastic.

Where will the black role models come from? one obvious thing from looking at pictures of the UK medallists is the lack of black faces. Considering the 2012 games will be held in East London, an area famed for it's ethnic diversity, will the only source of Black role models for the future to be Track & field athletes? Where are the Black swimmers? Where are the Black equestrian riders? Is the urban myth about Black athletes only interested in sport you can make money from from true?

The decision not to give Sarah Stevenson points for the head kick in the Tai Kwon Do quarters was a disgrace to Olympic principles and brings the Games into disrepute. What's the point of athletes training all those years if they can lose like that? Shame on the judges concerned. They should be brought to task. Why isn't there an appeal procedure?

sadly all this "cheating" stuff is spoiling things a bit today

I haven't seen it but I would tend to believe all the outraged comments must have a bit of substance - let us admit ALL host nations seem to get a few free kicks in judged events (Crowd enthusiasm ? Positive vibes from large local population? Judges feeling pressure? Whatever)

Don't think we should blame the Chinese people though.

Let us not spoil a fabulous fortnight by getting all nasty over a couple of home town decisions.

Cheer Sarah on in the repecharges , if she scores a bronze it will be a gilt-edged one , she is young enough to look forward to London...

And let us back the track team tonight - need a couple of medals to hold off those fast-finishing Aussies in the overall medal count smiley

2012. Much talk by ministers and the Mayor about keeping 2012 on or under budget.

Suggest you don't make promises that you will find hard to keep and suggest that instead you concentrate on preparing for an event that will make the nation proud and leave a lasting legacy for East London.

I know that projects to make the nation proud are rather low on the list of ministers priorities, right now they seem to know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.
