The Gold War: Britain v Russia

comment on the article
Tim Brabants

The British Olympic team head into the last three days of action just one gold ahead of Russia in the battle for third place in the medal table.

I've spent a bit of time looking up all the gold medals available on the final Friday of the Games, and the headline is that there are seven gold medals available to GB and nine available to Russia.

When I say "available", I mean it in the loosest sense. Daniel Awde, placed in the 20s last I looked in the decathlon, is not going to win for GB - but then the Russian decathletes don't look odds-on for gold either.

Of Friday's finals, I reckon Britain can reasonably expect some success in two - Shanaze Reade in the BMX and Tim Brabants in the canoeing - while Russia have a good chance in four, maybe five.

Scroll down for the full list of GB and Russian competitors (with Aussies thrown in for good measure).

The Russians are gold medal favourites in the men's 50km walk, where there are no GB entrants. In the long jump, GB have Jade Johnson, but her PB of 6.81m is eclipsed by Russian Tatynana Lebedeva's 7.33m. Brazil's Maurren Higa Maggi or Sweden's Carolina Kluft are also in the running for gold - Maggi has the best jump this year, 6.99m.

Russia's Evgeny Lukyanenko has the top PB, 6.01m, in the men's pole vault, where three Russians compete, but no Brits entered. Russia's two entrants in the women's 5000m final - devoid of Brits - are third and fourth in terms of 2008's best times. Ethiopians and Kenyans in the field will give them a real run for their money, though.

Russia and Great Britain go head to head in the women's 4x100m relay, with Russia just shading it on best times so far this year. Both teams finished second in their respective heats on Thursday - GB came home in 43.02, Russia in 42.87.

Tim Brabants has a strong GB medal chance in the K1 1000m canoeing final, in which Russia has no representation, but the tables are turned in the men's C2 1000m event, and Russia also has a boat in the men's K4 1000m final. In the BMX, Shanaze Reade is a distinct medal prospect for GB, but Russia has no BMX competitors.

Both Britain and Russia have two competitors in the women's modern pentathlon, where GB's Katy Livingston was bronze medallist at the world championships in May. Young Aaron Cook is not a medal hope but could spring a surprise in Friday's taekwondo, where Russia have no competitors.

Here is the full list of British and Russian competitors competing in Friday's finals (according to the official Beijing 2008 website, so subject to change). For the benefit of those keen to compare Britain's fortunes to those of the fifth-placed Australian team, I've also thrown in the events where Australian athletes are competing...

Haven't looked at the other comments yet but has anyone mentioned boxing? Surely there's a better chance of a Gold there than in decathlon?!

Youre honestly happy when another country is loosing so the UK is keeping the 3rd position? geez man get a life. lol. Or has that something to do with england/wales/scotland not being part of the football european championship. I think its great that they all try there best to win a medal for their home country. They deserve every respect. To cheer if somebody is loosing is just a sad display of the wrong type of patriotism.

Someone wondered if Russia is that worried about beating the UK, I live in Russia and it's a little more serious than that, they are wondering why they are not competing with the US and CHina... In fact one of the most popular articles on the Russian web is a vote about who to sack after this dismal performance... sounds like us and football! So far the most popular answer is 'all of them'. Get in there GB!!! (see www.livesports.ru for the vote)

We all now know 8 is the lucky number in China. However 4 is unlucky, so GB better hold on to their third place!

for all this anti-olympic ideal showboating from 'Great Britain'. isnt it weird that GB consists of England, wales, scotland and Northern Ireland. these all compete individually at everything else like football, but join together and claim to be one country at the olympics. so how many Gold medals did these countries win individually? would you all still be chest beating then?
