FAUMUINA SIGNS

Super League

The Tigers have completed the signing of New Zealand international back row forward Sione Faumuina from the North Queensland Cowboys.
The 27-year-old has agreed a one-year deal with the Tigers for 2009.
Sione has been a regular in the NRL since making his senior debut for the Canberra Raiders in 2001, spending one year with them before moving back to his native New Zealand to join the New Zealand Warriors. He spent five seasons with the Warriors before moving back to Australia in 2007, signing for North Queensland Cowboys. He also had a brief 3 game stint with Hull in 2005 at the tail end of that year’s Super League competition.
Primarily a back rower, Sione has played at stand off at times including some of his recent games for the Cowboys, but the Tigers are looking to him as a forward.
He has won two international caps for New Zealand in 2003 and 2004.

Coach Terry Matterson said: “I’m very pleased to have got Sione on board for next year. He will bring us some real presence, he has the size and skill and plenty of experience at the top level in the NRL. When I was at Canberra we tried to bring him back to the club but he opted to stick with the Warriors. He is good with the ball, and can play five eighth, but most of his career has been spent in the back row which is where we see him playing.”

Ah, a name I'm all too familiar with.

Signed for us at the end of 2006 and returned home in January because he was homesick!

Good luck Cas, make sure you hide his passport.

Cas will have no more federatation players than any other club so whats the problem?
The RFL praised Cas for allowing pathways for juniors to the first team even whilst relegated. Plus whats the point in just throwing juniors into the fray. Look what happened when quins chucked there kids in against Cas? Got thumped and can cause more harm than good. Cas have the smallest squad in the league and need to strengthen. Dont see many kicking off with Salford recruitment. I trust Matterson with the junior development process and think holding some of them back is spot on especially some of the younger forwards e.g. putting Westerman to the bench now and then. He's a well respected man in Australia for having a hand in some of the best crop at the moment with the likes of Israel Folau to start with. Most teams will fill the quota spots next year if not all teams.

Stooper,

I'm with you on this one, hide his pass-port because the minute he feels the desire for a hungie he will be off as quick as a flash!!!!

A risky purchase IMO.

And lets face it, it's not as if he has been setting the world on fire in the Cowboy's out-fit.

Seems to me Q_H_P that Terry Matterson is all talk and no action. I reckon he's worried he'll get the tin tack so instead of backing up his words of playing talented British qualified kids, he goes fishing for over rated and overpaid aussie/kiwis to try and get results.

If he was as good as his word when he complained that relegation stopped him playing the youngsters he should do so now. How are they going to learn otherwise? In the reserves, I don't think so!!

Sorry to jump in so late in the piece! Sione is a huge talent, but has some huge problems to go with it ... if you can keep him off the grog and get him to keep his fists to himself then he should be a great asset ... but it's a big 'if'

Waikato,

You know the answer to your sugestion is impossible and he is only going abroad to gain an extra couple of dollars to keep his given life-style going.

And putting in a 100% effort is not part of his plans.

This bloke is just using the system to his advantage of an extra buck at the cost of yet another English club unfortunately.

But when are these clubs going to learn, when they are getting sucked in????

Owen,

He may well be on the next plane, but what does that do for your clubs funds and quota???

It leaves them in the crap because they have made such a dumb decision.

Don't get me wrong I hope it all works out well, but surely some homework needs to be done before an administrator of a club starts signing cheques

If he is packed off back home it will open a Quota space up for us to look at players available Mid Season prob around Easter to replace him as most clubs and willing to release players around this point.

Yes he is a gamble but so was Willie Manu when he came over we tamed him and he is one of the best 2nd rowers in SL, Terry thinks he can do it with Faumuina
