Should the qualifiers be scrapped?

comment on the article

Steven McDonnell, one of the biggest names in Ulster GAA, has called for the 'back door' qualifying system in the Championship to be scrapped.

The Armagh forward believes a return to the old format, with the four provinvial champions in the semi-finals, would be fairer.

Not a surprising point of view from the Orchard County, perhaps.

If I have got this right, under the old system, Armagh would have contested five All-Ireland semi-finals since 2001.

But they have actually only played in three with the qualifying system in place.

Anyway, putting that aside, does Steven McDonell have a point?

The qualifiers have brought in lots of gate receipt and television revenue, but have also put a strain on the fixture schedule.

Some point to recent disappointing attendance figures and suggest the inter-county programme is perhaps at breaking point.

Others can argue that, if the top performers are going to receive payment through a grants scheme, they should be playing more top level matches.

McDonnell says he wants fair play, so should the Championship be purely knock-out from the start, one defeat and that is it? There is always next year etc.

Not sure Tyrone fans, or Kerry for that matter, would buy into that one.

That's cool Twinkle. We're friends again. Is it not safe to assume that all Ulster men will be supporting Tyrone on Sunday?

I’m honestly not sure how we would change it but I understand the problem that some counties have by winning their province and then going out in the Q/F. While the team they beat in the provincial final gets another chance........people have mentioned having an open draw and scrap the provincials. I don’t like this idea because as a Monaghan man I would love to see us win the Anglo Celt cup in Clones(which we haven't done since '88, a disgrace)

In the back door this year we had to face Donegal, Derry and then Kerry who put us out. While Kerry are almost automatic to be In the Munster final which mean even if they lose that, they go into the 3rd round of the qualifiers.
i know its not perfect but I personally how now sure how we can in prove on it.........

By the by, I am not Tyrone’s biggest fan but as a proud Ulster man i will be giving them all my support to win Sam)

The back door should definetly be scrapped, but in Armaghs case they might regret that in the seasons to come? When you have a bunch of drama queens from kerry, wah and shouting at refrees (TAKEIN DIVES! SLAPIN REFS BOOKS OUT OF THERE HANDS!CONSTANTLY WHINNING LIKE BABIES! teams like this dont deserve to be in the back door! If kerry keep doin what there doin! They will probaly start smooch after they score goals! laugh Just like soccer!

its never safe to assume because you may end up making an ASS out of U and ME.
i enjoy watching intercounty gaelic as a neutral, but i like to see the underdogs do well. i have to admit i was over the moon to see mattie forde score that goal. basically because no-one in the Armagh camp gave them a chance. everyone was talking about the drubbing they took at the hands of dublin. although this could be a valid enough arguement for your call to have the AI qualifiers scrapped, and i can see your point of view, being that due to the back door beaten provincial finalists are able to venture further in the all ireland series than the team who beat them. this is the case as you know in Ulster and Leinster.

if tyrone play to their strengths then they will come out on top, but as i read in the paper Wexford, in recent years were a one man team (mattie Forde) but this year he seems to have brought the best out in other forwards therefore they are more potent as a front 6 instead of just getting the ball to him and expecting miracles to happen.
i hope cork get the better of kerry basically to end their domination and hopefully we'll see that thug Darragh O'Sé finally retire.

See i can post some sensible ramblingsbiggrin

Steven McDonnell is entitled to his opinion about the qualifers. The qualifiers make it harder for a Provincial team to reach an All Ireland Final. However, a great team at the Quarter Final stage should be capable of beating a team that has gained momentum through the qualifiers. Even though I don't like Kerry winning their All Ireland Finals, it shows that you can't keep a great team down. Crap teams do not beat Provincial winners.

Despite watching Wexford embarass my beloved Down team, it's great to see Wexford in the All Ireland semi-final for the 1st time since 1945. The year of the Underdog indeed. Tyrone were fantastic against Dublin. Whoever wins the Tyrone v Wexford game should win the All Ireland.

Keep the qualifiers. They're great for the underdog & a team which had an off day.

Twinkle - agreed.
Joe - The underdog team won't ultimately win an All-Ireland - the backdoor system just prolongs the walk along the plank. And a team which has an off-day should NOT still be in the championship. Kerry would have been eliminated twice in the past 3 years.

you don't know that they would have been put out if there had of been no back door. They probably were a bit more relaxed knowing that even if they lost they had another chance.

the problem is that when a team lose their provincial final, they only have 1 more game to play to be back into a Q/F postion along with the provincial winner.
We need to put the pride back into a provincial title by making it harder for the losing team to get to the Q/F's. I think this is were the answer lies

Why do referees insist on giving Francie Bellew (one of the cleanest full backs in the country) a yellow card each game? It's as if they look at their watch and realise he hasn't been booked, and then take action. Any ideas?

No they shouldn't be scrapped. However a slight change is needed.

1. Provinical winnders whould play off as champions of their respective provinces.

2. The winnders move to the semi finals

3. The losers play the two winners left in the qualifiers.

4.The winners move to the semi final

This way ALL teams will have equal and fair chances to reach a semi.

The qualifiers have sounded the death nell for Provincial Titles - this slight change will see the Provincial titles respected and worth pursuing.
