New Venue for the Georgia Game

World Cup Republic of Ireland
comment on the article

Football's world governing body has taken the decision in the wake of the recent hostilities between Georgia and Russia over control of South Ossetia.

The match was due to be held in the capital, Tbilisi, which was bombed by Russian forces during the conflict which has left hundreds of civilians dead.

A ceasefire is now in place, although Russian forces remain on the ground in Georgia.

The Georgian Football Federation have the right to nominate the new venue for the match, and must present their decision to FIFA within the next seven days.

A statement released by FIFA read: "FIFA today decided that the 2010 FIFA World Cup preliminary competition match between Georgia and the Republic of Ireland, scheduled for September 6 2008, will take place at a neutral venue due to recent events in Georgia, which have affected security in the entire country.

"FIFA reached this decision after closely monitoring the situation in Georgia and taking note that UEFA also decided to ask Georgian clubs involved in UEFA competitions to play their matches in neutral countries.

"The Georgian Football Federation has until August 26 2008 to nominate a neutral venue to host the qualifying match against the Republic of Ireland, which will take place on the scheduled date of September 6 2008. The Georgian Football Federation will serve as the host association for this match."

Georgia and the Republic of Ireland have been drawn in Group Eight of the European section of World Cup qualifying alongside Italy, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Montenegro.

Lets home they nominate Croke Park as the neutral venue.

I can't believe the FAI let Trappatoni do the press confrence without telling him the venue was officially going to be changed! Totally unprofessional as usual.

One of the Georgians, Iashvili, plays club football at Karlsruhe. Maybe the locals will out to support them?

Won't Italy, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Montenegro claim the South have an unfair advantage, and insist that they get a neutral game too? Could be problematic later.

i think Karlsruhe(near Stuttgart) is good news for Ireland, we play Montenegro after on the wednesday, its on the route to Montenegro.

A trip to Georgia would have been very long and tough.

It's obviously better for Ireland - and I certainly would want to play this mob in some war zone. However, we're very lucky - and Ireland need to take advantage of this and get the three points on offer.

There's no reason why this game shouldn't be played in Tbilisi, imo. Either on the original date or at some re-arranged date in the future. Tbilisi isn't a war zone.

I am a RoI supporter and live 2 miles down the road from the German venue. Xmas arrives earlier and earlier every year.

Delighted.

Hi to all Roi Supporters: Flights with a known German airline or Aer Lingus are reasonable, the weather around Mainz and Wiesbaden warm and summery, the pubs full of live - this is all only half an hour from Frankfurt Airport away.

Go - its worth it.

PS: This will be a seating only event with 10400 supporters max. Get your tickets early, more info on www.mainz05.de!

Of course RuinAir also flies to Frankfurt Hahn, 70min away from Mainz main train station by 11Euro each way bus.

Its so much nicer however to start with a pint in the Irish pub in the lower level of Terminal 1 Frankfurt Airport before taking the 20min 3,60Euro train to Mainz.
