Us Open Preview 08

comment on the article

With the Final Grand Slam less then a week away there is excitement among tennis fans. This is probably the most open grand slam in the fed era.I will give you a lowdown on all of the contenders for the us open. For me there are 2 major contenders to pick up a grand slam to add to their cv.There is something about the late night sessions at the us open.

Novak Djokovic has a had a career year with a Grand Slam success, bronze medal, masters series titles at Indian Wells and Rome. For me though he has been out of form since the Queens final. So I think after his 2nd round exit at Wimbeldon he will be happy for a solid slam performance. He also seems to be running out of steam like last year and the flight from Bejing to New York will give him shorter preparation time. So in my opinion he will be a candiate for an early fall.

One of two favourites are Roger Federer although some may question this decision as he has been out of form by his very high standards, he is at an all time low with his confidence but all it takes is 1 match to change it around for a player of Rogers ability. Like wimbeldon though he has been virtually unbeaten here since his defeat to Nalbandian back in 03. I also think his gold with Stan will help his confidence no end and don't be at all suprised to see him in a showdown with Rafa 3 Sundays down the line. I also think with him being number 2 he has some extra motivation to gain the number 1 spot. If he gets an easy enough start I expect his confidence to come back. I have to admit I'm starting to get worried that he has lost full confidence on the singles court but being the champion he is I expect him to prove the doubters wrong and win the final grand slam.

Rafa Nadal well what more can you say but just how good can he be? I know people will point out that I could be over hyping his chance to succeed at Flushing Meadows but all the indications are since his defeat to Tsonga early on this year at the Australian open that he seems to be performing with more aggression in his game. He has added so much to his game his improvement since this time last year is phenomenal. Look for improvement on his best here which is the fourth round. I expect him to reach the final with Roger gaining some revenge for the months of pain. I expect his hectic schdule to catch up with him.

There are three players in particular who are grossly out of form and have a heap of ranking points to defend. Roddick could drop out of the top 10 if he falls before the quarters but being the US open I expect him to reach the quarters at the very least. Davydenko also has a semi to defend but I feel he is lacking enjoyment from his tennis and I can see him with a first week exit. Ferrer also has semi points to defend: will the pressure be too much for him? Only time will tell.

Andy Murray is in with a good chance of reaching the later stages but he is a player that needs to be on top form as his defeat to Lu produced. Providing he gets a decent draw expect him to reach the quarters but I cant help but feel he wont go any further and I still feel he doesn have belief to beat Rafa.

My outside tip to go deep is Gasquet who is motivated at the moment so I expect him to dazzle the American crowds and reach the semis. Another player who could cause some shocks is Mr Unbeatable Juan Martin del Potro who has won 4 average events. It also could be an advantage for someone like Verdasco who didnt qualify for the Olympics (5th ranked Spaniard at the time) although thats a long shot.

Being a fan of Tsonga it wouldnt be right not to mention him. Hopefully his injury has fully healed and he can have a solid tournament with him possibly reaching the second week.Thats possibly a little optimistic but with his big game, he can just about hit anyone off the court as was demonstrated in his demolishing of the world number one (sounds weird doesnt it?) at the start of the year. Im sure the top seeds would like to avoid him in the 3/4 rounds...

The draw has been made and there are some cracking matches in store. To look at the draw click on the links below

Most of all what im hoping for is an excellent 2 weeks of glorious tennis!!!!!!

PEOPLE.. LETS BE SERIOUS... THE USA AND THE UK BELIEVE THAT A COUPLE OF NAMES IS THE SOLUTION TO GENERATE TALENTED TENNIS PLAYERS...
PEOPLE LIKE GILBERT OR ANNACONE, PAID A FORTUNE ARE SUCH A WAIST OF MONEY... WHAT WE NEED IS NOT TOP PEOPLE BUT A SYSTEM... FRANCE AND SPAIN DO NOT HAVE ANY SUPER BIG NAMES AT THEIR HEAD BUT JUST A GREAT SYSTEM THAT WAS BUILT OVER 40 YEARS... LUNDGREN AND GILBERT ARE ALREADY GONE, ANNACONE WILL FOLLOW SOON AND THEN WHAT??? MR DRAPER YOU TOOK THE PROBLEM BY THE WRONG SIDE...

I see that not many mentioned Roger, I hope that he fools you all in your lack of confidence in him.It is very tough to be at the top for so long. He is a very gracious player and respectful of other players talant.Rafa has improved his game with every match, And I hope that they both reach the finals. They are my two favorite players and make Tennis really worth watching.

Though Nadal may be young and very fit, he still has a limit to what he could deliver in a very tight 2008's schedule. If he fails to hold on to his no. 1 position, we shouldn't treat this as his failure. It's not easy to overtake Fed, perform 100% in all tournaments and then maintain the no. 1 ranking. However I hope he could hang on. As for Fed with the no. 1 ranking pressure and high expectation off from his shoulder, I hope he would take this opportunity to refocus, win many more matches like he did in the past and win back the world no.1. Good luck to both of them!

everyone keeps saying that no pressure on federer will make him perform better ...
i dont think federer had any pressure being number one ... quite the opposite not being number one would lead to lack of confidence, and that is a burden rather than sth in his favour ... lets not forget federer used to win matches before walking on courts, he no longer has that, he ahs to work on each point just like any other player and thats not in his favour, no matter what he says !!! being number one was in his favour not the opposite, he cant fool me about that ...
btw i like the guy winkeye

Nadal has Murray and del Potro in his half.

Federer has Novak and Ricky G in his half.

My money? Ivo Karlovic.

For sure Nadal will come under pressure. But he has prepared for that. I don't think Rafa will make 238 weeks, but Roger will face Nola on his side of the draw, week in and week out from now on...

I disagree with the substance of Roger's comments. I think Nadal is happy he's number one, but not just for the sake of being number one. Winning is more important to him and he has one of the most amazing competitive mentalities in sports.

Right now, he's at the top of his game and that momentum will keep at number one for a while. Unless Roger rediscovers his old form and adds more factes to his already extraordinary game or someone else steps into the fray besides Djokovic, I can see Nadal completing the career grand slam by next year and winning at least three more Roland Garros titles before his career is over

Hello SirB,
I enjoyed your analysis and the sober walkthrough as to their respective chances. I tend to agree with you. I can see David Ferrer going out early-ish though (much as I like him) and maybe Murray going further this year.

We haven't seen anything much from Davydenko this year.

I also enjoyed Aimee Lewis's article which provides a link to your piece. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/7579358.stm
I saw Donald Young get narrowly beaten by Blake, 5 sets, it could have gone either way. Roddick and Santoro the magician had a bit of a todo at the end of their match with Santoro feeling like Roddick was body serving a little too eagerly. Roddick was 5-2 up and 30-0 yet pounded the serve (and not for the first time) AT Santoro. -Santoro gestured and refused to try to return the final serve. Roddick was within the rules but perhaps not within the spirit of the rules.
