David Price

Olympics
comment on the article

So finally some good news for the GB boxing team, with David Price guaranteed at least a bronze after his opponent’s corner throw in the towel due to a thigh injury. From what I’ve seen of him he looks not too bad although given the manner of his 2 victories it’s difficult tell exactly how good he is. What do people on here think of him, can he go all the way to gold?

Must admit I don’t really know an awful lot about his next opponent Cammarelle other than the fact he won last years world championships so is obviously pretty handy. Hopefully Price can pull it out of the bag and really give us something to shout about.

Thanks milky.

So if one of the finalist got a slight knock in a tough semi-final match and was deemed unfit for the final, would he be disqualified and awarded a silver?

I'm not knocking the rulings because they are obviously there for a reason and more than likely to protect the fighters, just trying to understand them a bit more.

ok

Any news on how the other boxers are doing?
We started off with eight.
Lost one due to weight making difficulties.
Lost another two, one close and one highly contraversial.
That leaves 5. How are they doing?
Why is the boxing getting such poor news coverage?

What with Tony Jeffries going through to the semis of the Light-heavy competition this afternoon, the team GB record looks like this:

Khalid Yafai (Flyweight): Lost 9-3 to Andry Laffita (Cuba) in the 1st round

Joe Murray (Bantamweight): Lost 17-7 to Gu Yu (China) in the 1st round

Frankie Gavin (Lightweight): Withdrew due to weight issues

Bradley Saunders (Light-Welter): Lost 11-7 to Alexis Vastine (France) in the 2nd round

Billy Joe Saunders (Welter): Lost 13-6 to Carlos Suarez (Cuba) in the 2nd round

James DeGale (Middleweight): Through to quarter finals so far. Faces Artaev of Kazakhstan for a place in the semi finals.

Tony Jeffries (Light Heavy): Through to semi finals (Guaranteed bronze medal). Faces Ireland’s Kenny Egan for a place in the final.

David Price (Super Heavy): Through to semi finals so far (Guaranteed bronze medal). Faces Cammarelle of Italy for a place in the final.

Looking at it on paper 2 guaranteed bronze medals at the moment (with the possibility of a third) isn’t too bad a showing considering the small size of the team, but given the spectacular successes in other sports at these games (namely the cycling and rowing) I’m not surprised that boxing has taken a bit of a back seat. Having your best chance of a gold medal withdraw without even swinging a punch didn’t help keep the general public interested either.

banjo.... i guess it depends on the nature of the knock... if he showed signs of concussion he wouldn't be allowed to fight. Obviously that's more likely when a fighter has been stopped... hence a greater likelihood of effecting a fight-off for bronze. I do re-iterate however, that this is what i'd always assumed... someone with an amateur backround should be able to settle it... no takers yet though!

I hope Price can get through his next bout OK, and it would be great if he could get the Gold. If he does, let's all really, really hope he doesn't get any stupid deal to televise his first pro fight. We can do without another Audley Harrison burst bubble.

Let's not look too far ahead. He's got a tough but winnable match with the Italian. It's all about self-belief, as well as judges who can actually see scoring punches from fighters who aren't from China! laugh

I hope the boxers get the recognition they richly deserve given their brutal art. I sense 'our boys' have been well drilled by a professional camp.

Because pugilism is not the preserve of the Bourgeoisie it should not be relegated as poor relation to the wowing, serwimming and yotting fraternity so prized thus far. (The boxing pages of the beeb's web coverage need a little more scribing me thinks.)

Perversely I don't half mind the unseemly showboating by a boxer who has just survived eight minutes of war compared to the prima donnas of the sprinting world 'bigging themselves up'.

Wishing Price a Gold for personifying the 'cheerful warrior'!
