BBC WM ALBION WALL 16/08/08

Premier League West Bromwich Albion
comment on the article

NOT BAD FOR STARTERS

Let’s start by saying that the Baggies season isn’t going to be decided on how they do against the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool. But if they can take something from those games then they’ll be doing well.

NEW SEASON..FIVE MINS IN...ONE NIL DOWN!

Although they didn’t take any points from this, they can take lots of heart from the way they played after going a goal down, especially in the second half.

Once the game got underway it was clear for all to see that this was going to be a very long afternoon. Arsenal were living up to their reputation. They were slick and effective, especially down their left where Nasri and Clichy were having a field day.

It was from there the goal came. Clichy got to the bi line and pulled it back fro Nasri to slot home from close range. The Baggies defence couldn’t get close. 1-0.

So there you are on the opening day of the season, one nil down to Arsenal at the Emirates with 85 minutes still to play. I must admit I feared the worst I’m sure I wasn’t alone.

BUT...with a little help from lady luck Tony Mowbray’s men survived to half time just one behind and still in it.

Marek Cech wasn’t at the races and Carl Hoefkens was struggling, the Baggies midfield weren’t close enough to the likes of Eboue and Denilson. Things had to change or surely the Baggies luck would run out.

Mowbray resisted the temptation to make changes but clearly sent his players out with more purpose in the second half.

Now there wasn’t so much space for the Arsenal midfield and all of a sudden Ishmael Miller looked a threat on the break. Now it was more of a contest. Arsenal were still posing goal threats of their own but now they had a Baggies side that were showing more nouse and battle.

Miller could have scored on another day; Almunia saved his effort and watched as Djourou cleared Paul Robinsons follow up off the line. Still 1-0.

The introductions of MacDonald and Bednar also provided reasons to be cheerful as they also made nuisances of themselves. But in the end Arsenal held on to the lead and the points.

The bookies weren’t proved wrong and the pundits too were no doubts gloating in self satisfaction.

But for West Bromwich Albion games like this can provide pointers to what’s ahead. They were not stuffed out of sight, nor were they totally outclassed. As the game wore on they got to grips with it and began to ask one or two questions of their own.

There’s still areas of concern, the right side of midfield and the right back position too on this evidence but there’s time to fix that - lets hope there’s money to fix it too!!

But all in all I was encouraged by this. A whole lot more than I thought I was going to be after five minutes!!

Arsenal will no doubts be chasing the Champions League and Premiership title, for the Baggies it’s the Games against Stoke, Hull, Bolton, Middlesborough, West Ham and even Everton next week that are far more crucial.

But, despite the result, this wasn't bad at all.

Rego!

Great article pal, always enjoy reading the Franksy and Rego bits in the programme. My Dad gets a sort od syndrome where, upon reading the pieces, continually repeats the words "Franksy and Rego" like some sort of magical incantation!

Will you stick your neck out and give us a prediction for Saturday Rego?

My birthday, can't wait!

Boing Boing!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK REGO.

Baggietrousers, thanks for the comment, i`ve never been called a "Magical incantation" before!!

Home games are crucial this season so it`s certainly a must not lose...but I want to see them get the first win sooner rather than later.

So a 1-0 win. But it won`t be easy.

Wise words.
Ultimately away games resemble bonus points more, other than trips to other struggling teams.

It's at the Hawthorns where the season will be made or broken. I'd love us to win, would make my birthday.

I remember the last time we played on my birthday, in 2003, a 1-0 win at Watford thanks to Lee Hughes.

Strangely, the last time we played on my birthday before that was the opening day of the 86/97 season.

Anyone who remembers will know it was our first season back in the second tier, and we lost 2-0 at Boothferry Park to Hull. Misery.

In 1980, we drew on August 23rd at the Shrine, 1-1 against Wolves.

Of course back then, we rarely used to have kicked off the season by late August, rather than the early seaosn starts we have now.

I also recollect one year, as a relative youngster, seeing us lose an epic 4-3 to Villa, some time in August.

Boing Boing!

rego - nice to see you on here mucka. good article.

correct in saying its not going to be easy on sat, and if we lose, it could be hard to swallow as most of us albion fans are thinking this is a game we can win, and if we intend on staying up, its game that we cant lose..

ive gone for a baggies 2-1 win.. ok

Very good article Mark.
Liam does raise an interesting point in asking who is your team. I don't expect you to answer.
What I do find interesting is that some of you (Daz Hale/ Tony Butler)do disclose their clubs but you and Franksie do not. Does it really matter if you were to tell us?
I think Daz does a very good job and often seems to go out of his way to praise us to prove a point.
If you support Manu or Liverpool though - I suggest you keep it to yourself!

The only thing i didn't like on Saturday was no national accreditation of us,

I saw lines like Brilliant Arsenal it sounded as though there was only one team at the Emirates, this is despite us giving a great performance against one of the best teams in Europe - in fact the World.

As for Saturday, well nationally are we deemed favourites to win a premier league game? If so is this the first time since when!? I feel as though the Everton game is huge for us even this early on in the season, win the future looks bright, lose a relegation dog fight? Simply put it either way from an optimist or a pessimist, but i have full faith we will win.

SBK ok

Liam - was told many moons ago by my cousin who is a journalist that Franksie was a Villa supporter. Don't know about Regan. Certain he is not one of ours.

Franksie is definatley wolves if you listen to him.
I think Rego is us. Its either him or Mike Taylor are def Baggies and have said so during the great escape, whoever it was doing the match day commntary at the Pompey game got very emotional when we stopped up. It was great to listen to on the Monday after the game.
