Britain's golden wonders

comment on the article

Well, it's not often you can say this has been a great few days for British sport.

Seventeen Olympic medals at the weekend alone - eight gold, four silver and five bronze.

Further cycling success on Monday means the squad have collected more golds than any British team since 1920.

They're calling it the Great Haul of China, and there are some stirring stories behind the triumphs.

There's Ben Ainslie - triple gold medallist and Britain's most decorated Olympic sailor. Britannia rules the waves.

And Rebecca Romero, not satisfied with a rowing silver from four years ago, she switched to cycling and left her rivals trailing.

How about young Louis Smith, Britain's first men's individual gymnastics winner for 180 years.

Not forgetting Rebecca Aldington, another to write her own chapter in sporting history. Double gold in the pool for one swimmer was unthinkable last month.

Rowers, sailors, cyclists, take a bow...

So which is your favourite medal story? Are we heading towards a glorious Games at London 2012? Or maybe we are in danger of getting carried away with the celebrations?

Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Isn't it great. Lots of talented people excelling, well done to them all. Brilliant coverage by the beeb too. To all those whingers and moaners: I think we should have an alternative games for them with events such as: moaning about too much money in sport, or, whinging about 'elite sports', or, complaining that we shouldn't be winning but just competing badly. A question though, if it's really all bad, why are they watching...?

What really annoys me about some British supporters, is the attitude that trying hard but coming last is the best one.

For the answer, look at the history of our empire, which tells a similar story.

Where we once ruled 2/3 of the world, we now struggle to organise bin collections efficiently

"singingHannahJ - Your comments are quite the most miserable, whining, xenophobic, of posts that I have ever read on 606. I am one-quarter Scottish;"

All I can say is that you can't have read much on 606. I looked back to HannahJ's post expecting something pretty outrageous. But all that was there was someone saying they consider themselves Scottish and don't identify with Britain, so if it's not a Scot performing they will support their favourite individual regardless of nationality, and even if that means they are against say someone from England.

I don't see anything wrong with that, and feel exactly the same way. The whole Olympics is based on competing nations, and if supporting your own makes you xenophobic then just about everyone wathcing this must be (including those English for whom the only relevance of this all seems to be finishing above Australis). And just because someone sees themselves as Scottish and not British should not mean they are disenfranchised and unable to support anyone.

We're not all unionists, get over it.

I just think it makes a lovely change to see people with real commitment to excellence and hard work being rewarded for their endeavours - and even better to see that more of them than ever are actually British.

With a sporting reputation which has been wrecked by our overpaid, work shy, celebrity seeking footballers who achieve nothing we can ever be proud of, the Olympics are fantastic.

Throw your ridiculously priced premiership ticket in the bin and go watch something more interesting instead. Even better, get off the terraces and go play one of them yourself!

Christ - where on earth did that come from? Most of what I've been saying has been in support of British athletes!

Well done to Victoria Pendleton and Christine Ohuruogu winning gold today...they deserve to be paid more than most Premiership footballers IMO...most of Team GB medallists have spent four years working extremely hard towards their targets of competing in the Olympics. Their success is thoroughly deserved.
