Championship QPR
comment on the article

There were signs at Swindon that Emmanuel Ledesma could take the Championship by storm this season.

For a 20-minute spell in the first-half, he was sensational.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say I haven’t seen a QPR player tear a defence to shreds in that manner since Roy Wegerle against Everton at Loftus Road shortly after his move to Rangers.

That’s not to say Ledesma is anywhere near the class of some of the players Rangers have had since then.

Ferdinand on his day was electrifying, Sinton in his prime reaped havoc and Sinclair was also an exciting player – especially during a spell in 1995 playing behind the front two, when he was superb.

More recently, Buzsaky showed his class last season and in my view remains Rangers' best player by some distance.

But for a while on Tuesday night, Ledesma was untouchable and would have beaten Swindon virtually by himself had his finishing been better. It was brilliant stuff and did remind me of Wegerle on that December day in 1989.

But for Ledesma and Rangers’ promotion credentials, the game at Sheffield United is the first real test of the season.

It’s a much stiffer examination than Barnsley at home or facing a League One team that tried to play open football.

Sheffield United at Bramall Lane is a big step up and if Ledesma excels in this type of away game, he may well be impossible to stop this season.

You can be sure the reports United manager Kevin Blackwell has received in advance of this game will have flagged up two things.

The first will be how dangerous Ledesma is and what a dangerous side Rangers look generally with the likes of Parejo and Cook also posing a threat.

The second will be how easily this Rangers team – and Ledesma in particular – could be picked off defensively against strong opposition.

Ledesma, for all his appeal, lacks maturity and that could also be exploited in this type of match, so he’s likely to be shown no mercy by the home defence.

That’s what makes today’s game so interesting and why the outcome will tell us a lot.

Iain Dowie isn’t at all minded to compromise Rangers’ obvious attacking flair to avoid being left open defensively.

There is a real willingness to let the opposition have it with both barrels and play open, attractive football no matter what.

For many people, myself included, that’s what Rangers used to be and should be all about.

I won’t be in Sheffield today as other work commitments mean I’ll be elsewhere, so I’ll be keeping an eye on the Rangers score and your comments when I can.

Cheers.

Good points there David, I think THIS is the real test of whether we will be genuine contenders or just on the fringe of the play-off places. I'm optimistic enough to think the attacking options we've got will produce plenty of matches like the Swindon game, unfortunately, the opposition we face are going to be a lot tougher and the goals we conceded were very typical of our weaknesses.

That said, this time last year we were just digesting the tragic news about Ray Jones, that really puts everything into perspective.

Having seen our opening 2 fixtures I to feel that in Ledesma we have unearthed a special player, I am in the age group that remembers the likes of Rodney Marsh & Stan Bowles, both magicians in my view, later followed Tony Currie, Gerry Francis, Trevor Sinclair, Sir Les and 1 or 2 others, not for a long time have I seen an RRR'ss player with this kind of flair, some players over the years have been worth the addmision fee alone, I feel Ledesma will be one of those, and my view will be that he and the team will do well today.

I would like to say that though some of the player's you mentioned David, were good on their day, it is a well known fact that South American footballers are better technically. I think there is a lot more to come from Ledesma, but there is one more player in the team that will probably have the same dynamic threat, Parejo. Teams will be kept very busy, this season, defending against, what for me is probably the best midfield in the championship. All we need is a prolific goalscorer at the end of it, to be productive. I to like Brickets Town use to go down the Bush in the days of Marsh & Bowles. I don't think we will see player's here quite in their class, coz those 2 were unbelievable. But i don't think the Ledesma's of this world will be far short of that calibre.

I like to think i am a good judge of players and people.

The first time i saw Ledesma was last sat.
Within 30 mins i was telling everyone around me that this boy is and will be so so special.
Not just his skills and ability but his whole never say die attitude and fighting spirit.

Yes he could be the best thing we have seen at Rangers for years.

More importantly though i just get the feeling our defence will get exposed today for what it is!

We MUST address this issue and fast.

6 defenders in the whole squad is a complete joke i am afraid.
