Olympics - Day Eight

comment on the article

There are not many days when you can be optimistic about British sporting chances.

Today is one of those rare days. A day to savour for Billy (and Becky) Brit in Beijing.

Day eight could be the day when Team GB makes their mark on the greatest show on Earth.

By the end of it we could even be above Michael Phelps in the medal table.

Golden weekend for Team GB?
news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/oly...

Becky Adlington gets our golden hopes under way shortly after 0300 BST in the 800m freestyle.

About 12 hours later Kelly Sotherton will be aiming for a place on the podium in the heptathlon.

In between we have very strong chances of success in rowing, sailing and cycling.

By the end of the day we could be sick of hearing God Save The Queen.

Of course we won't.

I'm going to stick my neck out and go for six British golds.

But it's not all about Team GB. We have 30 golds to hand out on day eight.

Not least, a certain Mr Phelps continues his quest for a place in the record books in the final of the 100m butterly just before Adlington. Gold for Phelps will see him match Mark Spitz's seven-gold haul.

If that's not enough we have badminton finals, the US "Redeem Team" against world champions Spain in basketball, some top-drawer tennis and the quarter-finals of the men's football.

Oh and potentially a new 100m world record on the track as Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay race off.

And plenty more as well.

Ah, but can they make Weymouth look glamorous in 2012? Somehow I doubt it!

(I speak as a long-time resident of the town...)

Because UKA,Ltd., the sports governing body were afraid to tell her not to. And they didn't want to throw away even the remotest possibility that she might medal.

We could still win five cycling golds yet, or at least that is what I've heard. That would make us a formiddable third place, we'd just have to watch out for Germany and Russia - the two greatest European Olympic nations of recent times - and pick up golds in other places (Triple Jump, 400m womens, sailing (two or three reasonable chances), canoe).

It would be a phenomenal achievement to get third place. To think we could be close to USA without Phelps at the moment.

I have never in my life seen a performance like Bolt's in the 100m men's final, and I've seen a few! I mean, he was literally playing around in the last 10m., and broke his own world record! Don't think we'll ever see the like of it again.

And to make this an unforgettable and unbelievable Olympics, how about Jamaica's 1-2-3 in the women's 100m final? Never thought I'd live to see the day when the U.S. ladies were beaten out of the first three.

Usain Bolt's was THE performance of this Games if not all time....what this guy could achieve if he took it seriously is anybody's guess.

What's he on? Rocket fuel?
