The great Shane Williams - for how long?

The great man himself, should be a shoe in for IRB player of the year IMO for his exploits in the 6N & summer internationals
He seems to have gotten even quicker in the last year which is remarkable, he's the form player in the world in a position where players generally have a short shelf life, particularly players of his explosive running style.

However what I'd like to know is how long people think he can continue performing at this level, he's 31 now and will turn 32 during the next 6N.

I don't reckon he'll last more than another season and i also reckon that his good form last year was the peak of his (and Wales's fortunes).

He is unarguably the best wing in the world right now, ok not the fastest but the best due to the skilld he has.

I don't think he has too long left in him to be fair, and he needs to remember that there arre still 14 other men on the feild. However saying that, he does seem to have gotten over his in-ability to pass now.

Virtual Line Breaker, i think Shane is the kind of player that would probably have missed out die to regionalism if it was there when he was a nipper, because he did have some serious issues with this disire to run alone constantly. It was ok back in a village team style system, where there were more teams for players, but the regional set up leaves only 8 places for a first choice winger to practice his art, and i think shane may have been one like Mustoe or Selley who have some poor games and are then lost in hte system for the rest of their future.

How long can Shane Williams go on for??

I honestly think that if it is left up to him he go for as long as his legs ca carry him,or untill Wales find some one as good as him to take his place.(witch ever comes first)

Firstly id like to pay tribute to Shane's attitude on the pitch. This bloke has taken some massive hits especially when our pack hasnt been moving forward and yet he doesnt stop trying to get over the gain line! If more players in our squad had the same attitude we would be a much better side!
Shane doesnt always get success with his sidesteps and tricks but he still is persistent in giving the opposition something to think about. I Believe that since Shane has spent a bit more time in the gym putting on muscle his game has got better. He doesnt get thrown around as much as he used too. His secret weapon though is his mental toughness. I believe we have shaun edwards to thank for that. Shane believes he can beat anybody!
Sadly i believe Shane needs to be looked after now in order for him to deliver at the next world cup. I believe he can be a great asset at the world cup aslong as he is looked after. We need to start looking at the bigger picture now and introduce some new younger talent to the side to come on for 15 mins or so. Shane will be invaluable to new players by passing on his knowledge and building consistency for the future.
DONT get me wrong Shane is the best in the world at the moment and is not passed it yet. I think we just need to start pulling on his experience by introducing new blood.
Shane your a legend!!

Sounds to me as if you mean 'hope' rather than 'reckon'! When Shane retires as a winger he will have several more years left to torment people from the No9 position, so don't get your hopes up yet!

Down to how long he can keep his acceleration, still his agility should remain for awhile yet.

Genetics and injuries will make the difference

its just a shame that the welsh set-up was so amateur until the regional setup. if shane had been taken into the ospreys academy aged 15 or 16, as happens now, he couldve been the great player he is maybe 5 years earlier. same goes for martyn williams.

LineBreaker, with all due respect, he was doing it from the word go at Neath. It's just a shame Mr. Henry decided to ignore him.

i'm with jon199557 on this. i remember watching shane when Neath came down to Cardiff, many mnay years ago - he was good then, but i will echo the comments a bit that he probably would have been world class sooner and for longer if we'd have been more porfessional earlier.
it still amazes me tho that some people still talk about him likes its his first or second year. i was at RWC2003 in Australia and after the NZ game everyone was asking me who he was. i was walking around Sydney the day after and people were saying - "who is that little side-stepper. he was awesone", and that was from Aussies and kiwis and all sorts.
so he's been at the top for 5 years at least. but i'm glad he's fially getting the praise he's deserved for so long. 20 years from now he will be spoken of as a legend.
as for the question, how much longer?? Please God - 10 years more!!! smiley

shane can guarantee his own place for as long as he likes, theres no1 else in wales good enough to take his place. i dont like williams simply because he's too selfish but i'm the first to admit what a top quality player he is...but i cant believe him as the best wing in the world as i believe sivivatu currently occupies this.
