Tennis Tension between Brothers

comment on the article

You could cut the tension with a knife.

Andy and Jamie Murray were sitting next to each other, at their delayed press conference, but they could have been miles apart.

They were due to come and face the questions at 9.50pm but finally showed at 10.30pm. Apparently, according to voices heard over one of the official walkie talkies, the delay was down to "issues".

When the first question was asked, there was an uncomfortable silence until Jamie finally turned to Andy as if to say "you explain it".

The guys looked gutted and it must have been a gruelling 15 minutes as they endured the post-match post-mortem.

They had been thrashed by Llodra and Clement, the reigning Australian Open champions, and were fortunate to get the four games they did.

Andy admitted he didn't serve well and didn't return well.

Jamie felt he was also below his best.

Andy disclosed he'd lost a lot of weight since arriving in China and hadn't realised it.

"Pretty unprofessional" he said with disarming honesty. "The boxers will tell you that's not really the best preparation".

He arrived last Thursday after flying halfway around the world from Cincinatti to Beijing via London and wasn't helped by missing two connections due to delayed flights.

Now he flies all the way back again: Beijing to New York via London. It's time for the US Open and Murray needs to remember that he's the form player on the ATP Tour.

Tim Henman bombed out of Athens 2004 in the first round but reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows a few weeks later.

Murray will hope for a similar run to banish the Beijing blues.

Whether the brothers will be getting on any better is another matter.

Please make your position clear. Is it or isn't it contemptible to take out your frustration on ball boys ?

In your first post it is "Why not "

In your next you write "In life
you respect the officials etc, otherwise sport is not worth playing'

In a later post you appear to condone "a curt word at one point in the throes of a frustrating afternoon"

Are ball boys to be awarded less courtesy than an official ?

As for the rest of your rant ( an attempt at irony perhaps ) re floggings and supporting our countrymen , it is all wildly irrelevant and silly.

You haven't answered the question

Instead you have resorted to trying to give a slick reply to avoid it

Do you or don't you condone his behaviour towards the ball boys.

ITT - Second time we agree, it was a slick answer wasn’t it

You seem like someone who has to continually prove you are right about AM. I sense you must spend your time watching all his games, looking out for all of the Murray misdemeanours so you become THE authoritative person on his behaviour on 606, which is kind of sad really.

Granted Murray is no angel, you either love him or hate him. However a different journalist described the exchanges with the ball boys as irritations caused by confusion over delivery of balls or towels further complicated by the desire of one of the Ballgirls to almost collide with him when retrieving the ball. Hardly abuse but hey I guess its all in the portrayal of the info and you & JO make the better story – Nasty Andy Murray.

He has already stated his Olympics experience has been unprofessional, however you have dissed that as being an excuse so can’t see him winning you over some time soon then.

Of course, Murray isn’t the first player to get irritated with ball boys, nor will he be the last. Indeed our new OC, the great Rafa was once reported as doing exactly this by the BBC during his classic 5 setter with Muzza at the AO in 2007. Still at least AM didn’t hit one in the face ala Henman.

So to answer your question, No on this occasion I don’t consider Murray’s behaviour to be contemptible - the attitude and comments of some posters however on this board well that’s a different matter. Trust that clarifies it for you.

Yes ,that's clear ! You think that behaviour is fine and dandy and to be accepted along with the swearing and the general bad temper he displays when things aren't going ok with him.

That's entirely your perogative of course but the fact that I ( and others ) do not like it does not mean , as you suggest , that we are unpatriotic and do not support GB

We do not OBLIGED to approve of this behaviour simply because he is GB and shows promise in a sport in which we do not do well in a a rule.

And by the way , you can't read the word "trying "

ITT - Ah the end of a beautiful relationship – shame and another english lesson to boot great. Ah the irony of it all.

So its okay if you are Rafa, Henman and half the current tour but if you are Murray then it’s a big no no, no swearing, bad mouthing etc. Fair enough. I bow to your greater knowledge as the paragon of virtuous behaviour.

Wait a minute though you support Arsenal, not exactly angels in the past so you must carry emotional attachments to sportsmen of this country regardless of behaviour and discipline.

Maybe just maybe and I have a sneaky wee feeling about this, you just don’t like him because he’s Scottish. Afterall its sort of hiding behind a pretence that you say he behaves badly on court, that’s hardly original or is it because you only support winners so you can sound good therefore you back Rafa all the time. Interesting - which one is it. Dont tell me I can guess, you a purist who is in it only for the love of the game and everyone else who disagress with you is unpleasant and unbecoming of sport - thanks for putting me in my place, I feel suitably chastised.

When all else fails ,it's the Scottish question.

Wrong.

I've lived many years in the Highlands and I love Scotland too
