***Arsenal Vs FC Twente Match Thread***

Arsenal
comment on the article

Here you can talk about the latest arsenal match against Steve McClaren's FC Twente in the the third qualifying round of the champions League on 13th August 2008 at Grolsch Veste, Holland.

Arsenal Team News:

Fabregas (hamstring), Kolo Toure (hip), Abou Diaby (thigh), Philippe Senderos (hamstring) are out along side the long term injured Eduardo and Rosicky

Almunia, Fabianski, Sagna, Gallas, Clichy, Hoyte, Djourou, Ramsey, Wilshere, Gibbs, Denilson, Walcott, Eboue, Randall, Adebayor, Van Persie, Bendtner, Vela.

FC Twente Team News:

Boschker, Wilkshire, Wielaert, Douglas, Braafheid; Tioté, Brama, Janssen, Denneboom, Arnautovic, Elia

GOAL UPDATES:

FC Twente 0 - 1 Arsenal (Gallas 63rd minute)
FC Twente 0 - 2 Arsenal (Adebayor 82nd minute)

STORY OF THE FIRST HALF:

Arsenal havent got going. the passing is average, the build up play has been woeful, and our defence has let their strikers through a couple of times. we have to remember that we are missing players due to injury and can only pray that any subs made will give the game a faster, slicker tempo and get some real shots on goal. our best shot has been a long range shot by clichy. says it all really...but we must keep the faith. 0-0 at half time.

STORY OF THE SECOND HALF:

Well Arsenal have hardly improved leaps and bounds but that was hidden by the fact that we scored two goals. a much needed first goal by gallas from a free kick followed by a nicely worked move saw walcott find ade who struck into an open net, with a touch from the goalie. not the best match to watch but a win is a win and with two away goals we should be in the next round but nothing is garunteed. not our best team and it showed. expectations for improvement have to be high but i still hold faith in wenger. our fitness won the game IMO.

Watford Spur - a sensible post, thank you, until you said about Ashvarin.

I find it EXTREMELY unlikely that Spurs will sign Ashvarin and even if you do he will play for you for what? A season... two seasons tops, and then he'll start talking about Barcelona again. The same will happen if he comes to us.

He is not the long term solution to your lack of forwards and if you meet the price tag that's been stuck on him you will find it very difficult to sell him at a profit (unsettled players are, logically, cheaper.)

I wouldn't get too excited about Ashvarin simply because you either won't get him, or he'll be heading for the exit before the ink on his contract dries.

Oh and I wouldn't count on holding onto Bentley for too long either. I suspect he'll give you the requisite 2 years to become his dream club (i.e a Champions League club) and then he'll be off, Spurs fan or not.

It's sad really... far too much ego in the game.

BornBlue .. why oh why oh why bother post nonsense ?? You finished a point in front of us last season and ... oh yeah ... you won nothing laugh

Your players are older and getting more rubbish and we had half our team out. So wish all you want but we outplayed you home and away last season and as for Man U, we outplayed them home and away too.

WatfordSpur, keep on dreaming bruv.

Dude who said "we had 9 first teamers out injured and we still beat FC Twente - who beat Ajax", well we had half a team against Ajax and we beat them after being 0-2 down .. doesn't say much for how good Ajax as a team are ! They are pants, anyone could beat them.

GunnerDoogal, just you have put it right;any seaon's first game can never be good. That is what we looked last year at Manchester dropping many points, but gradually improved.Yes it's good start.I am convinced. My arsenal may keep many mouths shut.

in the main the rivalry between Man U v Pool is based upon the genuine achievments both these clubs have had in recent years, luck or no luck for eiether side.

the rivalry between the above 2 and The Arsenal in the main is based on a healthy respect for us Gunners and the success we have had, albeit slightly different and of course we have yet to claim that CL CUP despite years of trying. non the less many up there do see the Gunners as a real threat. Chelsea have now , wether we agree with it or not, firmly joined forces to remove any possible stranglehold Man U and Pool may have thought they have over the PL or CL or other trophies and now there is rivalry there.

however this rubbish by a lot of the Spurs contingent is just that, the rivalry is nothing more than envy, its pathetic Tottenham have always been under achievers despite a few FA CUPs you are not up there with us, yet! yes you may be working on it, but you have a very long way to go, when you do achieve i am sure many will applaud and regognise your achievement, until that time zip it, keep your watever it is u dislike about Arsenal to yourselves, its very old hat now and has no place in the Modern game! in fact if u spent more time actually really competeing with others in the PL for all these years, instead of this fixation with the success at Arsenal you yourselves might well have been an asset worth having in the PL, as it stands at present you have achieved nothing worthy of praiseok

To all Arsenal fans, I hope we all stop getting deluded by this 'youth' nonsense and start demanding time-related results.

Its more important knowing you won something rather knowing how you won it.

Let's keep it that way.

It seems to have become a culture that when we use amateurs and escape with some points boast excessivel about it, and then when we lose, we use it as a sure scapegoat. Then we follow all this with talk of injuries, referees, lady luck, the weather, the pitch......it nevers ends.

Take the win as most important, and encourage a winning approach. we won urgly, not the best way to win, but the best thing at the time.

Mulangira, normally winning ugly means just that. But not only did we win ugly, we were extremely lucky too.

Being able to grind out results shows steel, determination for the most part, but you have no control over luck and to rely on luck is criminal.

I'm all for winning ugly, but lets try to avoid the need to win via luck as much as possible, because we all know that luck does eventually run out.

Hmmm that performance was very worrying indeed. While its good to know we still have the attacking quality to dispatch of mediocre opposition our midfield was non existence and highlighted that the loss of Hleb and Flamini was huge, no matter what people say. At present our squad is in a position of complete dependence on Cesc Fabregas, probably even more than Man Uniteds on Ronaldo last year, and that is a huge problem, he'll get fed up of carrying the team (which he didnt really have to do that often last year with the form of our other midfielders).

To even be as good as last year we need a proven and experienced defensive centre mid and a proven and experienced winger (Walcott and Nasri won't be good enough for a championship winning team.......yet), and I still think we also need a top quality centre back to challenge Man U or Chelsea. In an ideal world Wenger will take a bit of a step away from his ptrinciples, demand some money from the board and sign Frings,Christan Zapata and Arshavin (yeah him) who are probably the best realistic candidates who I can think of. However something like this is unlikely to happen and realistically Chelsea and Man U have superior squads, so i reckon our challenge will be over by March. I was thinking of mentioning Liverpool but after seeing them last night they shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentence as the top three, completely mediocre.

Credits to FC Twente. Small club that gave it all with some neat passing in first half. Excellent to see Dutch teams stick to 4-3-3 and their quick passing. It eventually broke them up though, and can't see Arsenal give this away ofcourse. 3-0 easy.
