to Gog and Jonesy

wonderful to see you reduce this great result to a "who comes from where" debate.
whats welsh for a pair of *ankers

Romeral,
I'm sorry, you must have read my posts wrong, because you clearly misunderstand what my point is.

It's natural to show special interest in people you can associate more with. For example, being Welsh.

I'm sure you would show extra support for someone who came from just down the road from you, wouldn't you?

Please don't belittle us for being proud of our roots.

I was disgusted to hear Five Live's Nicky Campbell referring to Nicole Cooke as NICOLA COOKE twice on the breakfast show this morning. Come on, a British sporting legend and our first gold medallist of the Games and he can't even get her name right? Someone get him on a flight home, would they?

Jonesy in Oz - not necessarily. Personally, I was more delighted in Cooke's win than I was in Rebecca Adlington's gold in the swimming, as I'm more interested in people who do well in sports I particularly like than people who live within 25 miles of me. I don't think I'm alone in this.

Ok, we can agree that we support different athletes for different reasons.
The reasons can be varied, but all make you feel like you can identify with the athlete, whether it's your region of origin, sport of interest, or if you are very lucky, both.

Good luck to Team GB, no matter from which region they originate. Let's hope Niclole and Rebecca have won the first of many gold medals.

Local newspaper had Nicole Cooke's name completely wrong calling her Rebecca - well done the Scotsman.

Absolutely brilliant.
One of the toughest events at the olympics in appalling conditions.
I was so pleased after Nicole's valiant effort in Athens and such a lovely person to.

Well done Nicole Cooke, she won through true grit & determination to come from a poor fifth with 300m to go to the finish line.
As for the Wales/England saga its all getting a bit stale and boring now. You won't get a more passionate Welshman than me but everyone needs to recognise that it's team GB in the Olympics and not the individual countries of the UK as in the Commonwealth Games. I'm supporting team GB wherever they come from in the UK.

Awesome race, knew she could do it - well done Nicole! Good Luck tomorrow!

Maybe she'll get the recognition she deserves as the most sucessful British Cyclist ever! Not holding my breath though...

Of course she was going to win, a number of reasons :-

1.) She's not a quiter
2.) She's Welsh
3.) It was pouring with rain, have you ever been to Wales ? she's used to it.

comment No.3 is not detracting from her her achievement but it had to be a factor, and it is actually a compliment because when the going gets tough the tough get going, little bit of rain, nah it's just a low cloud.
