Olympics - Day One

comment on the article

What a way to kick off the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

I'm not sure how much they spent on that opening ceremony, but I think it's a few pounds more than they spent on the Clapham (south London) fireworks display I saw last November.

That spectacular event is very much consigned to the video archives - the ceremony, not the Clapham display - now it's time for the real multi-sport action (I don't count the footie).

So what are the highlights today?

US swimmer Michael Phelps begins his quest to win 8 (eight!!!!) golds.

The equestrian events start in Hong Kong (recently battered by rain).

Gold medals on offer - seven:

Cycling - men's road race
Fencing - women's individual sabre final
Judo - women's 48kg final, men's 60kg final
Shooting - women's 10m air rifle 3 positions final, men's 10m air pistol final
Weightlifting - women's 48kg final

Enjoy.

I am really disappointed to find that the BBC coverage of the Olympics consists of full live daytime coverage and then a highlights programme at very early evening. As a professional I, along with a great many million other professionals, do not get home early enough to see even the highlights programme so, other than recording it every evening, I will miss the whole Olympics. Could you not have put a highlights programme on later in the evening?

A quick question. Can anyone at the BBC tell me why the IOC blocks the BBC and other international broadcasters from streaming or providing video highlights from anyone other than to people in that country ? I'm in Spain desperately trying to see what's going on and I can't access any footage. I can only get Spanish feeds...which at best is poor !!

I find it quite hypocritical of them when they (IOC) are trying to portray it as a global event.

By the way don't mock the BBC over it's coverage. TVE (the main Spanish broadcaster) finds the time to have 4 mins adverts in between swimming heats so you end up missing at least one heat per event !!! Go Figure ?????

BBC News Website has a headline that 5 million people watched the opening ceremony last evening. This is roughly 9% of the UK population. This indicates a high degree of appathy in the UK even before we get the bill for the next ones in 4 years time. Given this, how can the BBC justify sending 430 staff to Beijing for which is a minority sporting event.
Sorry Mods for not singing to the Olympic tune, but did anyone ask us if we wanted the next games?

I watched it and spent all the time wondering what exactly we're going to come up with to trump it.

mrphiblies,

Come and pay for the next one then, as I can't be bothered being brainwashed for the next 4 years being told what a "boon" it is for the country.

Can I suggest you move 1200 miles north?

does anyone else hope that the london 2012 organisers have the nerve to ditch the opening ceremony? what a waste of money... yes it was spectacular, but in a rather inevitable way. does Britain really feel the need to prove itself in the same way as a country with a dubious human rights record like china who have superpower ambitions? no.
was anyone else thinking about that earthquake everyone was talking about a couple of months ago? that, along with tibet, seems to have been swept under the carpet.

and how was it that the ceremony managed to distract our attentions from a war breaking out in our own continent?
