Equestrian - Beijing 2008

comment on the article

Equestrian is just one of 28 sports being fiercely contested at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

This is where you can talk about all things equestrian in the build-up to and during this summer's Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

Whether you want to tip someone for one of those precious gold medals, talk about the quality of competition, or debate its merits as an Olympic sport - this is your forum.

Over 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in 302 events across all sports - here is where you can get involved.

The headline refers to "debutant Cook". Since she's female, shouldn't that be "debutante"? Once upon t a time the BBC set a standars for correct English (or in this case French!).

The coverage of the equestrian games is BAD. No dressage, no showjumping yet. We don't all have digital options, and why should we miss out? We all pay the same licence fee. More coverage please, we want to know what's going on

Hey, is it just me or what? Why the (bleep) isn't anyone actually answering the question asked by the BBC: to comment on Ms. van Grunsven's historic victory? Everyone seems to be moaning and bitching about coverage of equestrian events instead of saying how absolutely SMASHING it is for any one competitor to win a third consecutive gold medal (and with a silver before that), or to perform in 6 consecutive Olympic Games.
As far as I'm concerned, other events have more reason to 'complain' about coverage, say archery or shooting, both sports 'do' nothing for me personally, but I bet there are loads of people out there who would be thrilled to see some footage from those events: there's always someone that feels left out when so many sports are in competition at the same time - so give the BBC and other broadcasters a break, please, I'm sure they're doing the best they can! And no, I don't work at the BBC, am not even British, and my countries broadcasts are equally hindered by time-issues (naturally when having to cross Asia to Europe timezones), commercial considerations (the times we live in, alas) and trying to giving everyone their "equal" share.
So, if no one else will say it: GOOD FOR YOU ANKY !!!! (and Salinero of course smiley )

I agree. Seeing Anky Van G's performance was fantastic. Well done her - fantastic achievement! I watched it on this site as couldn't watch it live (at work!).

BUT ... BBC TELL US WHY?
you keep saying that Emma Hindle - best Team GB performance (commentators said for 30 years) - so why the h**l aren't you showing that on either iplayer or this site?!!!

Dressage to music is probably the most popular of dressage events. I can understand why you don't show back to back grand prix or the grand prix special but DTM - it wouldn't kill you to show 4 or 5 test - not just one!

I know it was shown live yesterday afternoon - 12.15 to 15.15 but some of us do have to work in an office you know! I tried to log on for 15 mins at lunchtime but as I work for a big Corporate - they had blocked the BBC site through the firewall (v v boring!). Sure I'm not alone in this frustration so I couldn't enjoy your live coverage.

Come on Beeb with iplayer and this fanatstic Olympics website - why can't you show us a little more equestrian?

I agree. I was lucky enough to watch it all live and it was smashing. Jenny Loriston Clark's comments were very knowledgeable, naturally because she is so good herself. Horses really are the most noble, beautiful creatures and the DTM shows off their talents to perfection.
Anky's music was so good, the horse's movements suited it so well. She deserved to win - a great achievment.

I'm in Hamburg, working and was thrilled at being in the one country (apart from Holland) where I was guaranteed wall to wall coverage of all 3 disciplines. Imagine my dismay when there was no coverage at all! It sounds as if, although the BEEB has not given the coverage we all yearn for, they've done more than the Germans or Eurosport. Thankfully it has been taped for me to watch when I get home. Having not seen the dressage, I probably shouldn't comment, but both Anky and Isabelle are inspirations to us all. Well done to Emma for getting us nearer to the mark, but we still have a long way to go before we can match the Germans and Dutch. Perhaps more money put into all 3 disciplines in terms of horseflesh would help as it's certainly not lack of rider talent that holds us back.

Considering equestrianism is one of GB's best chances of medals, the coverage is despicable. The finals of some sort of violence-inducing martial arts (played between two players who weren't even British) took quarter of an hour out of the dressage. Who even watches martial arts?????

I agre that Anky's achievement is great. However I did not personally find her music inspiring or entertaining. In fact it was slightly dull.

I would love to be able to re-watch Emma's test on iplayer

Please help, my boyfrind thinks that dressage should not be an olympic sport (he is a squash player and is still miffed off that it didnt get voted in but softball did)
Anyway, how can I convince him that dressage is a proper sport without repeating the same arguement i have been doing.... "you couldnt do it!"
I know tht it requires great horsemanship to do these moves like the passage and the piaffe and i know even after 10 years riding I couldnt do them!
I think that the coverage has been gret on the bbc and if you did miss it most of them have become available on youtube. The bbc have to cover alot of sports and the decisions they make are based on previous years. The iplayer hasnot done me any good because i just keep watching the equestrian and not much else!
