Cycling - Beijing 2008

comment on the article

Cycling is just one of 28 sports being fiercely contested at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

This is where you can talk about all things cycling in the build-up to and during this summer's Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

Whether you want to tip someone for one of those precious gold medals, talk about the quality of competition, or debate its merits as an Olympic sport - this is your forum.

Over 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in 302 events across all sports - here is where you can get involved.

Absolute respect to Shanaze for giving her all and she's got 2 more Olympics in her, being just 19.

But that last corner 'crash'? Remember F1 with Schumacher and Hill in Australia 1994? Hmmmmm! As an ex-BMX-racer myself, there's masses of needling between riders, all veiled currently behind the Olympic hugs and smiles...

But chin up Shindog, show 'em all in 2012!

morris, that's BMX - do or die.

totally, totally gutted for Shanaze, but if someone else was gonna win it, ACC was the 'right' one - a fitting end to her amazing career.

The problem with riding behind another cyclist is that you will always crash if your front wheel touches the bike in front. The front rider rarely comes down. Shanaze gave it her best shot, she was just a little unlucky, I suppose. That's life. And there's another 2 Olympics ahead of her where she can win. No point being hard on her. Remember, she was in the final, we here at our PCs were not.

Like someone else has already said, in BMX no-one aims for 2nd place. 2nd place is, after all, the best of the losers. Good on you Shanaze, you've got plenty of time to show the world what you've got. N.B. For anyone interested, The UK Championships are at Peterborough this Sunday......

Spot on - with all the hoo-haa about the dire state of the nation's "yoof" here's a youngster who's ambitious, gutsy, hard-working and not willing to settle for second best. We need more up and coming sportsmen and women like her.

Oh, and she's hard as nails too!

Good on ya Shanaze, you should be proud of yourself.

I'm no biker, but risk injuring yourself and a competitor for an impossible move - not on.

In F1 you'd be disqualified, the equivilent in football (i.e. a leg breaker) you'd be sent off, but here we say well done for landing on your backside?
Admit you were second best in one race, take a silver and come back stronger.

Gold or I wasn't interested makes a mockery of all the other events and athletes who worked hard for 4+ years for a podium finish.

When you are world champion there is only one position you are interested in. Look at Philips Idouwu yesterday... so despondent with second and rightly so. Equally 'Morris' in F1 and football when the big teams don't win a single event they complain like the world were about to end for the simple fact that there is only one game plan, victory. Finally as for all the hard work the athletes put in, ask them what they want, they will all say they dream of GOLD!

She should have gone for the gold, yeah she flopped but that's not the point.
No risk = no reward.

All our golds have been won by athletes on their backsides - she was never going to win unless she sat down. Great determination from her etc etc and enjoyable but but still feel it's an event that has no place in the Olympics.
