Beijing 2008 - Weightlifting

comment on the article

Weightlifting is just one of 28 sports being fiercely contested at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

This is where you can talk about all things weightlifting in the build-up to and during this summer's Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

Whether you want to tip someone for one of those precious gold medals, talk about the quality of competition, or debate its merits as an Olympic sport - this is your forum.

Over 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in 302 events across all sports - here is where you can get involved.

I love the weightlifting. Especially the lighter classes. Awesome strength!

To the athlete who won gold: congratulations. A word of caution: do not divide the audience between Chinese and non-Chinese supporters. This implies that only Chinese people support Chinese athletes. This is not in line with the Olympic spirit!
As a Canadian who has spent five years teaching in Sichuan, I find the comment that "I had the special support of the audience, especially from the Chinese audience, ..." unfriendly. I may not be in the venue, and I may not be in Beijing, but my support goes to all athletes who compete, regardless of their nationality.

"I read not so long ago that most of the spectators of weightlifting were either other weightlifters or their entourage."

Yeah, we have all "read stuff somewhere" in the past to back up our comments. Where did you read that, Heat magazine?
If you are not into weights then why on earth are you posting in this article? Bafoon!

To anyone who has ever trained with weights at any time, they will realise that this acheivement is staggering. I weigh 95kg and train 5 days a week with weights. I'm not weak but would struggle to lift 100kg overhead. These athlete's accomplishments a truly staggering. Congratulations from an appreciative fan.

There is so much more to it than brute strength, technique is a massive factor, plus their agility and flexibility are extremely impressive not to mention explosiveness. At Mexico in 68 they tested weightlifters and 100m sprinters over 20m and the weightlifetrs were faster.

FoNZ might be able to shed some light, but I think they deadlift nearly twice what they snatch.

Correct me on this one but...

I vaguely remember elite lifters deadlift /clean ratio being approximately 1.6.

Take Hossein Rezazadeh if his C and J is 263kg his deadlift would be 420kg. Not too unbelievable.

His best Snatch at 213kg doubled would make 426kg deadlift.

Ok so its only one guy but a deadlift / snatch ratio of 2:1 certainly does seem achievable.

Currently the percentage of snatch to clean and jerk is approximately 80% in elite level. So again 80% of Rezazadeh's 263kg C and J would be 210kg. Thats 1% less than his actual.

The numbers seem pretty close.

On another note..

In addition to the sprinters I believe they also tested weightlifters in the standing long jump where they performed better than the other athletes.

I'm so happy for Jang Mi-ran. A great effort. Korea's population is smaller than ours but look where they are in the medal table. A miracle on the Han indeed.
