Mick Fitzgerald

comment on the article

Was sad to read this morning that injury has finally beaten Mick Fitz and he has had to retire from the saddle.

He's been a cracking asset to racing over the past few years and will be missed.

Does anybody have any Fitz memories from over the years? My favourite would have to be some of the Fondmort races at Cheltenham, two warriors working in tandem, exactly what racing is all about.

Totally agree with all comments, Fondmort at Cheltenham my fav also, personally i wish he had retired 2 years ago as i also think his bottle had started to go. He wont go into training, he has stated that on numerous occasions however he talks so well that he will be a pundit to follow. I believe he will also be on Ch4 team for all the major jumps festivals, he will take some replacing at Hendersons though

Mick was a brilliant ambassador for NH racing,
a superb horseman, a great character, the racing public owes a lot of thanks to MICK.
Lets hope he has another career in racing that will give him as much enjoyment. he will be a great man for TV. I'M sure NICKY HENDERSON is feeling a bit sad today, however he has a couple of very good lads there most notably ANDREW TINKLER.

Channel 4 should get him on the team straight away and get rid of no-all (i never tip a winner but still incredibly smug) McGrath, Tanya (what am i here for, Stevenson) and Lesley (pointless) Graham.
Mick is a TV natural, knows what he is talking about (unlike the three i mentioned) and comes over as a really nice bloke.

Good to see him retire in one piece (just about) and it's probably just as well the decision has been taken out of his hands. He nearly paid a very high price for extending his career.

I agree with Championship Point. Too often the temptation to keep riding is too great and older jockeys with less bottle do their reputation no favours. I'm glad he has hung up his boots and wish one of the great jockeys of our generation a happy retirement.

You guys have said it all!!
I am sure everyone in and out of racing will wish Mick all the best for the future. As you all say he will be missed in the saddle and we hope to see him around in some other capacity.

In 1999, on the Cheltenham Gold Cup day, Mick Fitz rode three winners, including See More Business at 28/1. I backed all three of them, individually and in a treble and won enough to put down a 50% deposit on the house in which I now live. There is a huge painting of Mick FitzGerald on See More Business over my fireplace. One of the greatest jump jockeys ever. I fully echo all the very best wishes for anything he does in the future.ok
