Rangers braced for Kaunas challenge

Champions League Rangers
comment on the article

Making the group stages of the Champions League is a big deal for Scottish clubs these days.

Rangers fans hope their side can keep their hopes alive tonight by seeing off Kaunas in their second round qualifer at the Dariaus Ir Gireno Stadium.

The sides drew 0-0 in the first leg and Rangers manager Walter Smith has demanded an improvement in Lithuania.

Rangers will line up with a 4-1-4-1 formation: McGregor, Whittaker, Broadfoot, Weir, Papac, Dailly, Novo, Thomson, McCulloch, Adam and Miller.

What do Rangers fans think of that side? Are you confident of going through?

It promises to be quite a night and you can follow the action and give your thoughts here news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

Perhaps Celtic could have more of a pedigree given their players but what I have seen of Rangers in the UEFA semis and the final itself and the two legs with Kaunas, they just seem to lack that sharp scoring option that's needed on the end of any passes or crosses. Leaving Miller alone was not a viable option, Rangers are much better than that. Too many midfielders when they could have done with another striker, being that they were under pressure for not scoring in the 1st leg.

Celtic has some great talent in Artur Boruc, Aiden McGeady and Shunsuke Nakamura but I do feel they are at the same level as Blackburn or Portsmouth. Rangers would come in as Newcastle or West Ham, a good team that can once in a full moon function well collectively. They would be more than welcomed to the EPL where I'm concerned.

English fans going on about the state of Scottish football and the behaviour of Scottish fans have a very short memory. As an Englishman I find some of the remarks on this post are an embarassment. Pandering to outdated stereotypes of Scotland and Scottish football is laughable and a somewhat blinkered view.

Anyone who remembers English football in the 1970s and 1980s will surely remember some very unattractive long ball, kick and rush style football on pitches which resembled a World War One battlefield. It was only 20 years ago that Wimbledon won the F.A. Cup playing that way. It was the coming of the Premier League with all the extra sponsorship, TV rights and the resulting cash which improved the standard of English football and this improvement has largely come about by the ability of English clubs to attract and afford big name overseas players. Scottish football has seen some big improvements in recent years as well, but on a shoestring budget compared to England. And some supporters of the England team still can't control themselves when they travel abroad, so I don't think we are in a position to take the moral high ground on fans behaviour.

As for the SPL being too predictable, well the EPL isn't much better. Rangers and Celtic will finish in the top two out of 12 teams in Scotland nearly every season, but then how often do Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal finish in the top four out of 20 teams in England? Almost every season.

Also I recall Celtic narrowly losing 3-2 to Man Utd at Old Trafford in the 2006-07 Champions League and then beating Fergie's boys at Parkhead. So is the gulf between the EPL and SPL that big, considering how much more money English clubs receive?

I think English fans are in danger of becoming football snobs at a time when the national team is a joke. How ironic.

Well, Walters lack of ambition on the park has cost us dear again! Sure we managed to squeak a couple of results last season by playing to a system that suited talentless players (with one or two exceptions)but the banana skin was there waiting for all, except Wattie to see.The much publicised revenue shortfall will not I hope be met by having to sell Cuellar,
but who would blame the man for wanting to further any chance of an International call-up by playing at least in the UEFA Cup. Any self respecting agent would be having a word with Spurs,Everton,Villa---etc.
Premier league money and a better showcase. And due to a wee injury not cup-tied!!A few Championship clubs might be sniffing for Hemdani, Cousin,or maybe Boyd.
Perhaps if Boyd got a game he wouldn't be carrying such a big backside.
Doesn't seem to have any effect on Charlie Adam mind you! Hands up all those who think Kaunas are better than Falkirk? I wait with anticipation our assault on the SPL title.
Too soon to show Walter the door we have considerably more pain to go thru' before that happens.
Maybe a squad clearout would see boys like Furman and Fleck get a chance in midfield. They don't fit the 1st team style just yet on account of their desire to go forward towards the opposition goal. Right now I am thinking of the money I 've saved on Euro. night tickets, I might go out and buy a DVD of Geoff Boycott's greatest Test match innings, that would last as long and be marginally better than watching paint dry.
Come on GERS, BOUNCE BACK AND SAVE ME FROM THESE NIGHTMARES!

What are you saying: there is no gulf, but, if there is it was because of the money?

That is like saying "So is the gulf between the standard of living in the UK and Haiti that big, considering how much more money the UK has".

Celtic and Rangers "may" climatize eventually in the EPL as they participate in the money that is earned, but, they have always been shoulders above the rest of the teams in Scotland. . . to compare leagues you would have to ask "will Motherwell or Aberdeen finish in the top half of the EPL".

Thank the lord this argument is hypothetical.

Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen have as many or more European honors than the teams from England on the list. They don't have the money that the PL has but they do well with what they have. England has 50M people and Scotland 5M. Inverness CT couldn't draw 30,000 a game even if they had all of the highlands come to watch them play.

Obviosly posted by someone who has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. Talk about strereotypeing!! Are all English fans hooligans? Manchester was the first European tie last season were anyone was arrested, these were not real Rangers fans. The geography of the final was that it was just too close, any idiot could go with little financial investment and as a result there was trouble. If the situation was reserved and the population of Moss side rocked up in Glasgow you'd have had the same result. Please keep your uneducated, steroetypical, narrow minded comments to yourself.
