Team GB football - A Great idea?

Olympics
comment on the article

The idea of a football team representing Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics has many people salivating.

Equally, many fear that it will dilute the strong individual identities of the English, Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh football teams.

Phil Harlow outlines the main arguments for and against Team GB here news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/oly...

Do you think it is a good or bad idea? And, furthermore, do you think it will happen? Let me know your thoughts.

therefore 2012 will not, as you claimed, see the English olympics. they will be held in London alone
--------

not strictly true is it, weymouth isnt in london ect. but getting away from the technicalities, did you not see those red and yellow flags everywhere during the beijing olympics? thats the flag of china

howdlemania - i did see plenty of chinese flags in Beijing. Rather unsurprising, though, as Beijing is in China

do you just not 'get' this, or are you being deliberately obtuse? The 2012 olympic games are not Englands, and they certainly aren't Britains.

They are London's games, solely. Accept it because it is a fact.

And Barry Scott, i just don't see how even an assurance from Blatter will stop the threat of a combined UK team. Blatter doesn't have the power to issue such a promise. It would have to go to a FIFA vote and I'm certain they would vote to join us all together forever, and that's something nobody wants

yes its obviously london 2012, but you dont seem to be understanding my point, the whole of china got behind the beijing games because beijing is in china, the whole of england can be proud that the london 2012 olympic games are in england, won by an english city

And payed for by money taken from the nations and the peoples of Wales,Scotland and N Ireland to assist the english to stage their olympic games, yes i will say it again "Englands Olympic Games", we never wanted it or asked for it, but we end up having to pay for it, we are four seperate nations, if the english want it pay for it , why money should be diverted from Welsh,Scottish and Irish projects is a travesty, why should we assist you in promoting Britain (England) to the world, we are only tied together by an outdated act of union, in our case 1536 that as long outlived its use

Blatter has the power, as President of FIFA, to issue waiver on the subject of a combined UK team influenced by the 2012 Olympics. Rules could be made, and passed on acceptable terms by the delegates.

The point I must turn to, is that this SHOULD be US, the Scottish, Welsh, English and Northern Irish AGAINST the powers that be who are stopping us from forming this team. Instead, we have become embroiled in arguments between eachother.

Hypothetical Question:

If there were no politics surrounding this venture, and after the games we could still operate as seperate entities, would you like to witness a UK team in the Olympics?

I don't reckon I'm going to get too many people saying 'Yes!'.

im not sure how correct your views on the funding are, although i do agree some money will come from non london-centric sources, but also from corporate funding, sponsorship, other taxes, mainly from londoners i gather

and yes i support independance of wales too

----------------------

Yes, I would

I enjoy supporting the UK (NOT 'Team GB' grr) at every olympic games

and IF there could possibly be 100% assurances that it wouldnt affect the future of the 4 home FA's, and if there was no political motivation behind it, then it would be a good thing

However that will neverm ever be the case.

I not tryin to put down olympic football, but in all honesty it's not really that great, I mean I wouldn't watch it because,
one - i don't agree with unionism
and two - it's almost as bad as tottenham celebrating our peace cup win in 2005 laugh

Read some of the posts earlier. The fear of FIFA forcing us to filed one UK teams is from the FAs of all 4 home nations (they wield an awful lot of power within FIFA). It is unlikely we will ever be forced to operate as one UK national team. Any FIFA member can propose a vote on the existence of four UK National teams. No one has ever done so.

Even if someone did UEFA would not wish to lose 3 votes within FIFA and 3 allies on the FIFA lawmaking executive. UEFA Also has just enough votes with our four FA's to ensure it can veto anything Europe doesn't agree with. With 3 less votes from Europe, UEFA would not longer have the ability to block things.

Finally FIFA would never realistically get itself involved in forcing a UK national football structure on us. Who would decide where the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish clubs would slot in within a UK league structure, cups etc ?

Ideally however we would compete as 4 national teams in every sport and then there would be none of these stupid arguments
