Referees...

...expecting greater pay because of the 'pressures' of their job?

The utter cheek of it.

If I want more pay in my job, I'm expected to work competently for starters, and then improve the quality of my output. If I want promoted, I've got to be prepared to take greater responsibility and accountability for myself.

Have referees done either of these things over the past two seasons to warrant any sort of recompension?

If you want to be in a profession where you are rewarded for what you deem as 'good' performances, you should also far more easily be reprimanded for the uncountable numbers of 'bad' performances too. (How about awarding the match fee retrospectively on a performance related basis, assessed by an impartial panel of amateur referees?)

The thrust of it is this: In my opinion, the standard of refereeing continues to slide. They're becoming more officious, less equitable, more erratic and resultantly demonstrating a level of inconsistency that has seen an increasing number of club officials speak out to the point of censure.

And then what happens? What do the SFA do to review any accusations of bad performance? They put up a ring fence around the official and slam the manager/coach/player/chairman that dared to question the authority of the establishment.

Referees are accountable to no-one. They do a job, for better or for poorer, and are never any worse off for it. The system is currently not a correct one.

So where is the pressure and justification for a 100% pay rise there then?

Start to do your job well and demonstrate that you can be accountable and then maybe we'll talk.

But don't you lot dare mess us around to the point where you hold us to ransom, otherwise we miss the start of the season. Like you aren't unpopular enough...

An utter joke.

I agree with the main post. If they were doing their job to a good standard then sure a pay rise is justifed.

The standards though have been dropping these past few years, bit of a cheek to be asking for a rise.

Bottom line, Monkey's get paid peanuts in the circus and this should be no different.

Two bob league anyway.

That was a slightly unnecessary comment, do you not think Tevez?

Possibly, however it barely makes up for the amount of "English bashing" that seems to go on and lets be honest, the standard of the SPL does appear to be dropping quickly.

Didn't see much 'English Bashing' on this thread? Anyhow, there's 51 million of youse, surely you can handle yourselves?

The standard of the SPL would surprise you. Cheap foreigners have been replaced by talented kids. I'd imagine not many folk down your parts would have heard of guys like Hutton and Gordon until they made multi-million pound moves...

This thread does throw up one very relevant question.

DID MIKE McCURRY ACTUALLY GET PAID FOR HIS PERFORMANCE AT TANNADICE - for which Craig Levein got fined today for telling the truth.

OK. OK I'm paranoid.

P.S.

I live down south (doing missionary work, you understand) and I can be as sure as it is possible to be without actually seeing them that 51 million do indeed "handle themselves" on regular basis.

Perhaps not this thread and I admit you made me feel a bit bad, because all the way through this you have had constructive debate, but on another thread today, then well what can I say, the bitterness and jealousy is unreal when at the end of the day both countries under achieve to a degree.

regarding the standard, then I get to see my share of Scottish football, yes there are some decent kids, Motherwell have a few, but you still do have the very cheap imports and except for Hutton (great player) and Gordon (Hmm...not worth 9 million, but still young jury is out) then there is not much of a Scottish influence on the EPL except for SAF. I am just not sure the standard is as good.

Anyway back to the point, I think the ref's are right to try and get a bit more money, especailly when they see what their English counterparts get, however I do agree, there should be more accountability. Nothing worse than a ref who waves you away unwilling to spend 20 seconds as to why he gave that decision, complete and utter wind up.

Based on the performance of Rangers tonight I wish the powers at be had held out on the pay rise and we had a strike, don't know if I can watch more of that.
Was it just me or were they that bad that Broadfoot looked one of our better players on the night
