Twenty20 at the Olympics

Twenty20
comment on the article

Adam Gilchrist is today calling for Twenty20 cricket to be played at the 2020 Olympics. He is not the first to do so - there seems to be a bit of a bandwagon going on.

Would you like to see Twenty20 played at the Olympics? Would it really open up the game in places like China, Japan and Russia (which would be the aim)?

And can you think of any young players who might be gold medallists 12 years from now?

''One other thought, would England and Scotland play as one?''

Yes (can't see many Scots getting in though), and we might get a few Northern Irish players too, though they'd probably prefer not to break up the current all Ireland side.

England's Cricket team could already be classed as Great Britain;
- Simon Jones is Welsh
- Gus Fraser is a Scot
- Robert Croft is Welsh
- Ed Joyce is Irish (mmm - that'd stretch further than just GB though).

- Robin Smith
- Allan Lamb
- Kevin Pietersen

Perhaps considering the last three we should become the Commonwealth... smiley

The olympics is already rediculous with all the nonsense people play there - its totally undermining winning an olympic medal.

How did the olympics start? Not as a team sport and just tests of strength and stamina (track and field, wrestling etc) of the individual...

It kinda sucks now... the only highlights at this one was Phelps and the mens track events (Bolt)...

I mean HANDBALL??? Come on !

I think its a great idea...if the IOC are going to include sports like baseball (hardly an international sport) and beach volleyball, why shouldn't cricket get a look in? There's more countries play cricket internationally than there is baseball or softball.

scrap the T20 WC, that would make the Olympics the pinnacle of T20... maybe the governing agency of the country who wins it could pay the players what they would have got if they had won the WC (though I doubt this would happen). Maybe having it as non-paying would be better for the sport anyway as it may make players focus more on test cricket (the superior format) once again

This could be a great way of increasing the popularity of the olympics in the sub continent- India only won a handfull of medals - and would be intrestng to watch

In terms of future olympic champions for England, I'm tipping Leicestershire's Jimmy Taylor for big things. Wouldn't be surprised to see him playing for England in 12 years time (He'd be 30)

As long as tennis, baseball or softball is an Olympic sport, I don't understand how cricket can't be. More people play cricket than they do baseball, so why not cricket? 20twenty is perfect for the Olympics- don't wait till 2020 (although that would be a happy coincidence), get it approved for the 2012 Olympics in London. Where better for Great Britain to defend their Olympic title than at Lords, eh?

And, to answer the question... probably Warney, he'll some out of retirement to claim the one award he hasn't got yet, an Olympic Gold.
