Frazier Campbell STAYING at United

Premier League Manchester United
by Jim Gaffigan! (U10138513) 02 August 2008
comment on the article

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed young striker Fraizer Campbell will remain at Manchester United this season.

Campbell played a major role in Hull's promotion to the Premier League last term and Tigers coach Phil Brown had hoped the striker would return to the KC Stadium this season.

But, with his search for extra firepower stalling, Ferguson has confirmed Campbell, who scored an 82nd-minute winner against Espanyol in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's testimonial at Old Trafford on Saturday, will stay where he is.

"Fraizer's future is here," said the United boss.

"We do not have any strikers apart from Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez and Frazier plays in that area.

"He took his goal really well today and that won't do him any harm.

"He is a progressive young player. He is quick and determined and he can do very well in the game."

Anyone else besides me excited about this!??? I'm OVERLY excited especially after the season he had with Hull last year! He definitely looks one for the future!

Tevez, Rooney, Campbell, Saha.....not too shabby IMO!

Worst thing we could do is get an out and out striker. Everyone seems to be worried about Ronaldo going and us not being able to score but he scored so many because of the setup. Not saying he’s not a good player because he is but last season Rooney and Tevez opened up other teams to allow Ronaldo into the game. The whole team also provided great distribution that aided Ronado. If he’s not on the pitch then one of the other players would step up to the mark. Might be more distribution of goals across the team but he didn’t win matches on his own.

If you look back to past seasons Ronaldo was marked out of games. This season Rooney and Tevez took the heat off him. Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets marked again this season and the goals come from other areas but that’s the great thing about our setup. It’s not possible to stop us by putting two or three guys on one of our players.

If we get another striker then it’ll be back to the days of Ruud. And we didn’t win much then did we?

Re Campbell, last Saturday was the first time I saw him play. Look strong and fast but not the finished article. Tevez on the other hand was immense. Still, not going to judge him on one performance. Too many players are judged to quickly. Look at Evra as an example of that. Everyone hated him in his first season. Now I can see him becoming a real legend at United

And to all the Liverpool and Arsenal WUM just remember we’re playing for 7 trophies this season. So while you’re talking about a quadruple we’ve got something a little bigger to consider. And before you go on about three being Micky Mouse, just remember what it took for us to be in this position. Champions of Europe. Champions of the Premiership.

I agree Footy Fanatic - AFC, everyone is taking your commments out of context. Also you are right, this is a big story because 1) When was the last time fergie bloodied a youngster? 2) England have few strikers, the media are hyping this up because maybe, just maybe there is hope that FC can forge a partnership with Rooney which would solve help solve one of the many problems England are facing right now 3) there naff all happening in the football world other then the drawn out transfer sagas.

Now I expect to be slated here, but the last youth player to have actually made it at OT was John O'Shea (broke into the first team 2002?), the rest havent been deemed good enough.

Also its the shock that a big4 club is actually going to blood an English youngster. Its the first time one of them is going to do it in years. There is a long list of failures of English players trying to make it into the first teams. As I have previouly said, high hopes for FC. Hopefully he'll come good this season, and I'd like to wish him the best of luck

------------------------------------------------

Finally someone posts a well thought out comment. Could not agree more. About time an Englishman from the youth set up has an opportunity in the Old Trafford first team and I really hope he makes the grade. Also hoping Danny Simpson can end up being an acomplished right back and there will be no need to buy Micah Richards, with Wes Brown as cover for both the RB and CB postions.

Regarding other comments, Arsenal are the prime example for giving youth a chance. Pity that they're currently predominantly non-Engligh. Have heard, however, that a significant proportion of the U17 and U19 England team set up has Arsenal player, so you never know.

Final comment: ChrisM08, what on earth are you dribbling on about? I fail to see how using a 20 league goal statistic re Rooney and Tevez for last season has any bearing on now. You have failed to look at their contributions via assits and general play. Ronaldo got the goals he did because everyone else sacrificed part of their games to ensure that the team prevailed. That is what Man U are about, playing as a team. Hence why many supporters are pi**ed off about Ronaldo's antics because of the me me me" attitude and not aspiring to be what Man U are about. A team with great players, great attacking play and ready to muck in when needed. Rooney would play in goal if he was asked and that is what it should be about.
Finally, some players go to a club, some end up at others for varying reason. Your insinuation of SAF being an alcoholic and this is the reason why players do not come to OT is the sort of moronic comments you would expect from and ABU.

Rant over and I will no longer expend any futher energy on responding to stupid comments.

Firstly i think its a great idea, what is the point in investing in the youth set up if we are never going to give promising youngsters a shot? He has proved himself at a pretty decent level for someone his age with little experiance by bagging 15 goals and contributing massively to promotion, its quite clear hull fans rate him very highly and many agree he was there best player last season. The lad has even managed to notch up a few in pre season.

He is fast, strong, athletic , smart and can quite clearly finish, why shouldnt he be good enough as a back up? We want someone thats young, hungry and wants to prove themselves Look at our best players last season and you may find that its a common trait.

Secondly do we really want to go back to the one dimensional man united that we was with RVN? We scored the most goals last season, yes ronaldo was remarkable but rooney and tevez still chipped in with 40 goals between last season, hardly poor is it? Match that with anderson nani being more experianced and improving with most games and i would say were set up nicely.

Yes i agree that sometimes if you stand still you move backwards, but also why fix what isnt broken?

If SAF signed anyone would like it to be ashton, hes young, fast, strong and mobile, would fit united brilliantly and wouldnt cost more than around 10-12 mill.

Whats the point in investing 30 million in a new player when weve already invested in a young player that has the hunger and clearly the talent to prove themselves at united?

Manucho looks pretty decent as well seems very similar to adebayor, also very excited by possebon and welbeck, lads look seriously talented.

"Ronaldo doesn’t want to be there, and the 64 million duo Rooney and Tevez have about 20 league goals in them, between them!"

Oh dear, we seem to have missed the obvious. Work rate and endeavour on their own do often produce very little, but in a set up such as United use, it's players being dragged around the pitch that creates openings for goalscoring.

Just look at the number of players likely to score. Yes, Ronnie outshone everyone last season but you adapt to circumstances and if he goes or gets two or three-man marked this time it will open up for those others.

As for Rooney, if you can't see his worth then we must watch different games. I've heard Chelsea fans slagging off the little man Zola and it just makes me smile - He's among the best they've had so if he's not good enough then there won't be many that are.

Oh how bitter is the fruit of that unreachable vine!

I think MUFC should give Campbell a chance. many of the top teams are spending millions on their youth teams but what are they producing. Not very much, how many young players have come through at Chelsea, Utd or Liverpool or many other prem sides in the last few years.

What is the point of investing in youth if you never give it a chance, Utd should give the guy a go over the course of the season and see how he does. He should be treated in the same way as Nani and Anderson were last season and given a run out in some games and to come on in some others but not worked to hard.

Hopefully he will be an internaitonal of the future.

Shouldn't have sold Rossi should he? Everyone knew the boy was a very good striker.

Give this kid a chance. I belief Fergie's decision always break dividends when it comes to the youngsters. Back in 94, people were skeptical when players like Ince, Kanchelskis, left united. Virtually unknown to us, the Neville brothers, Scholes and not forgetting Mr Becks came into limelight and forged their names in the history books.

It has always been United's way since the Busby babes to give their youngsters to prove their worth to be in the 1st team. Though it has been barren for the pass few seasons, i believe Fergie's confidence in the youth setup is priceless. He knows which players deem fit to play in the 1st team. Those whom he feel are not worthy or can't make it, he'll offload them.

Players like Simmo (sadly he'll be on years loan to join ince) Fraizer, Evans and Possebon look like raw diamonds waiting to be polished.

I'm happy for Fraizer but dissapointed for my club, Hull. But I certainly agree that if he broke through as a product of your youth system then that sends out the right messages to other clubs - invest in your young players & give them a chance. Yes United have done ot before. Fraizer will become a star, I'm sure, perhaps a future England striker too..

SAF said that the only strikers that he has are Tevez, Rooney and Saha. What about that african striker that he bought - Manucho? Has his work permit issues been sorted out?
