Predictions: Nadal's Stay at No. 1

Masters Series

With Federer's 4 year reign as no. 1 coming to an end if not this week, most definitely after the Olympics, can Nadal maintain such dominance? Already he is complaining about how the tour is structured and the effects of the hardcourts on his body. Perhaps he's telling us that there's no way he will able to maintain the high level of play needed to stay at the top.

I think Nadal's stay at the top will be a short one- 6 months to a year. What you think?

I think Fed will be back with avangence. That final at wimbledon was one of the greatest sporting spectacles I have ever witnessed and Nadal is undoubtedly class. What a lot of people are forgeting however is that Federer had glandular fever at the start of the year. I'm not making excuses for him, and he himself has never brought it up but anyone who has had it knows just how much energy it takes out of you and how long it takes to recover. For normal people sometimes it can take up to 2 years to be back to full capacity. Think how serious that is for a proffessional athelete when the smallest of margins matter. Fed looked knackered at the end of that final. It says something for the pair of them that between them they only lost one set in Wimbledon up to the final. Both are class and Nadal will have a long run at no 1 when Fed retires......but he's not going to have it all his own way just yet I feel!

Boy, what a lot of clever people on here. They know everything-Federer to bounce back-Nadal to win the French next year-Federer is the greatest of all time.
This are all personal opinons guys, not necessarily true.
Whether Federer is the greatest ever depends on how one views greatest and anyway the last chapter of his era hasn't been written yet.
As for next year, this is all just speculation. No one know what's around the corner, neither in life or sport. Nadal could be injured tomorrow, so could anyone else. Djokovic could go on a tear, Murray could suddenly find that consistency that is the only thing missing.Federer may bounce back or just keep sliding, no one knows, so try not to be so dogmatic, you're not prophets

There are two facts which are crucial in understanding how 2009+ will pan out tennis wise.
1. Federer recently recovered from a debilitating mononucleosis illness and for all we know he may still be in the final recovery stage but does not want to give too much away to the competition and send s the message out that he is fine ( i personally think he is still recovering- it took ancic 2 years to really recover from this)
2.Nadal is an explosive player and his style of play is brutal, although emphatic

I beleive that he cannot keep this stayle of play up without facing some injuries.

Also federer has appeared to be suffering of late from lack of mental toughness which is very uncharacteristic. He needs a coach that will allow him to regain that mental superiority over his rivals and keep on whispering to him that he is still the best.

It's not only Nadal that fed needs to worry about. Djokovic and maybe even murray will be hot on Nadal and federer'heels come the next few months.

Men's tennis has got even more exciting. It would have been boring if Fed just strolled past sampras record. now there is a challenge and you can bet he'll be up for it. He was unchallenged for nealry 5 years( and was probabaly secretly wishing for a real challenge to come up) his secret wish has now come true. let the games begin!

It's funny how smart people think they are.
Just prior to the French Open this year, there were numerous "smart" people, telling us that Nadal was much more likely to lose his No.2 slot to Djokovic than to take the No.1 slot off Federer.

Where are all those smart people now?
Pretty silent me thinks!

well done. Of course we're not prophets. It is all opion. Thats what message boards are about! that's also what is great about sport - no one really knows what going to happen otherwiswe bookmakers wouldn't make any money!!!!

I happen to feel Fed has had a bad year (by his standards!) because he was ill, other people think he's past it (at 26???) I personally don't think he'll ever win the French if Nadal is fully fit but likewise I don't think Nadal would have beaten him at wimbledon if he hadn't had glandular fever!

But your right its all speculation and opinions. If we knew what the hell would be the point of discussing it here!

btw consistency being the only thing missing from Murray's game is your opinion not a fact so think about what you write before you start having a go at everyone else. I happen to feel Murray has many things missing from his game and even at his best can't really get near Nadal or Federer at their best! but again thats my opinion which I'm entitled to as you are your's!

I think Nadal should focus primarily on Grand Slams and for that reason limits fight to defend #1. Danger for him is too lots of masters tournaments. If fortunately the injuries will avoid him, he can reign even three years.

According to the Men's ATP Tour Race, Nadal has been no. 1 all year. Why isn't this recognised as showing who is currently the best player in the world ?

While Fed may have lost his number one spot he has also lost his air of invincibility over the year, and now he seems beatable to many of the player taking him on which is a huge phycologic boast for them, the standard of mens tennis has improved so much over the last four years i don't see anyone holding the number one spot for over a year any more.....
