Sharapova out of Beijing

comment on the article

Just to let you know. It's bad news Sharapova fans.
She has two small tears in her shoulder and is out of the Olympics.

I would lay money on the fact she plays the US Open though. Too predictable.

Indeed I did as I suspect Bing well knows - she may play the US but if this is a repeat of the same problem it doesnt sound good , given her style.

Bing of course she represents Russia - I thought you might have credited me for knowing that ?

There is an interesting difference between American and British attitudes to resident "foreign" sports players. The US seem to resent it if the person doesn't take US nationality and represent them. And they have no difficulty in treating him or her as American if they do make the change. Example: Navratilova.
Here in the UK we whinge that the person isn't really British and often try to minimise his or her achievements.

I think, Duggie, that she is sacrificing Beijing for USO. But I donīt think she will have much success there -- mental toughness alone will not suffice nowadays. If her shoulder aches, it will further limit her already limited game. And it will also have more serious consequence in the long run. A real dilemma!

It's sad that she will now miss the US Open....

She tends to play better on hardcourt, and was probably in with a real chance of winning this, with Henin retired.

Now, I think Serena should be favourite, depending on the draw she receives....

Who cares?? This is karma for her father's coaching from the stands and her silly grunting that she does, to put her opponents off.... ;o)
