Women's Open

comment on the article

watching the coverage on the beeb half of the players must be from Korea or Japan, what have these countries done to produce so many great players all at the same time? The same can't really be said for the mens game for these countries, or at least not to the same extent.

I think i heard Aliss say all of the top 30 players are there which is great showing that Wie is definately in a world of her own when it comes to missing majors, and that they are still certainly the highlight of any players year.

What do you think of the chances of an English major winner, Hudson just 2 off the lead after round one and that was including a disappointing bogey on the last.

Anyone else watching the bbc coverage is it just me or have they only got cameras on the back nine? if so why do you think this is?

(and i couldnt write an article on this subject without mentioning how Creamer is looking today, very nice :D )

We better shut up before ladyputt comes along and slams 460cc of driver through our heads.

Here's a really good interview after today's play. Rebecca Hudson talks quite in-depth about the unfairness of the LET contribution to the world rankings, and she's bang-on. How can you win back to back LET tournaments and drop down the rankings? Anyway, here it is

On the subject of far east women golfers.
Peter Alliss and Maureen touched on this during the commentary. If you get enough young people into the sport and they spend hours upon hours practicing you've got to produce a quantity of good players.

Who were the only players Maureen said were still on the practice ground at 6.00pm the day before the tournament began? The Koreans.

What happened to our two much-hyped new ‘superstars’ – Kiran Matharu and Melissa Reid? Why couldn't they make the cut in front of a home crowd in benign conditions?
I hope they haven’t had their heads turned like most of our so-called challengers by being on the front pages before the back pages. Golf is full of them - Poulter (I think his Open performance was just a blip), Dougherty, Rose ……

But what these two girls can do is use their looks to attract more girls to the game. The unsmiling robots from Asia won’t, that’s for sure. Those Asian girls seem to me to be products of wealthy parents who have pushed them into the game and driven them to the top at the expense of any sort of life.

The EWGA should use our girls’ attractiveness to promote the game more, just like Netball has done.

Talking of the EWGA, just why are they preparing to ditch four of its non-execs only 7 months after the new dawn? There is a lot of money being wasted on admin which could surely be better spent on bringing new girls into the game.

Thoroughly enjoyable third day's play. But the way the asians are playing must be worrying for British Golf interests.

Natalie Gulbis finally starting to prove she's more than just a pretty face.

where was the coverage of Paula Creamer today?

I think it must have been because she chose to wear trousers instead of a skirt today as the camera showed her in the background as her playing partner played a shot but failed to show any of hers! A bit confusing really as she didnt have a bad round, and it wasnt uneventful from her scorecard. any ideas why?

I think you've answered your own question.

They even let Gulbis get a plug in for her Addidas clothing in the post round interview.
(I find these interviews a waste of time, so I think do the players).

She didn't even put on "wets" when it was chucking it down, maybe it's "in the contract?"

The Koreans are renowned for having a tremendous work ethic, but as you say, why this makes them so dominant in the women's game but not the men's is a mystery.

I'll speculate wildly: far-eastern countries tend to have peoples who are reserved (hence the stereotype of east Asians as intelligent, but unsociable). Golf requires a lot of solitary practice. Western women are less likely than Asian women to take the necessary steps towards being a top golfer because they are less likely to want to spend so much time by themselves. Western men however have less of a problem with significant self-imposed isolation.

For this argument to be a total explanation we'd still expect more successful Asian men though. Perhaps it's also because power is more important to the men's game than it is to the women's, and Westerners are taller and more powerful than east Asians.

Perhaps there are other cultural reasons behind this as well (why Korea and Japan and not China?).

So to sum up, I haven't got a clue but it's very likely we'll have an east Asian winner come Sunday.
