Wie continues to do things her way

LPGA Tour
comment on the article

What is going to happen to young Michelle Wie a year or two from now?

She has decided not to attempt qualifying for the Women's British Open and guess what, she is now playing in her eighth men's PGA tour event instead.

It's a very odd state of affairs isn't it? Does she risk becoming a curiosity of the women's game? Does she not have a hunger to win on the women's tour? Eventually, surely, the sponsors' cash will run out if she doesn't start winning...

“I can see, now, what’s going to happen this week,” Leadbetter continued. “She will start swinging out of her shoes as she tries to keep up and that’s when things can go wrong technically. She may just become the first woman to make a cut since Babe Zaharias — but at what price.”

"The novelty of it seemingly is wearing off a little bit, but you know, more power to her if she wants to try it," Duval said on Wednesday. "I don't know if the PGA TOURis exactly the place to gain confidence. You can get your head beat in pretty easy out here."

I think the comments above say it all really.

She shouldn't be allowed to enter a mens PGA Tour event. There is women's golf and there is mens golf they are set not so people can cross opver to the other. You don't see men crossin over to the womens tour do u?

Let her play with the men if that's what she wants. She has no obligations to Women's golf at all, if she believes she is going to be good enough to complete on the mens tour then why should she have to prove it on an inferior one first?

She is 18 for jeebus sake, how many 18 year old men have made a PGA cut? Her idea is surely hat plaing with and against higher quality players on tougher courses she will improve faster than on the handicapped easir courses used in the women's game and she is dead right.

Leadbetter's comments - "She will start swinging out of her shoes as she tries to keep up and that’s when things can go wrong technically." - are proof of that. She might go techincally wrong by trying to hit the ball too hard this time out, but with each attempt she will get better at it, the women's tour actively discourages this by having shorter holes, therefor the only way to improve that fascet of her game is to play mens events.

If that means she doesnt mae a cut until she is 21 then so be it, if i was a male 18 year old they would HAVE to do it this way anyway. Just let her get on with it, if she makes it the it will have been the right decision, if not then she will only have herself to blame.

And let's not forget the real reason for all thisnegativity, the women's tour. They are so frightened that a girl will come along who can live with the men and will finally prove that there is no reason other than their own mental attitudes that women can not compete as equals, which will in turn lead to makings the sexist (oh sorry I mean womens) tour even more irrelevent.

Away from "should she or should'nt she" is my querie of why is a lady golfer permitted to enter in a Men's event? I am not being sexist but if, as it seems, there is nothing to prevent this happening then surely Men players should be allowed to take part in the ladies golf tournaments so that we have equality for all. Now I would imagine that most of the best men players would 'clean up' if they played in a Ladies golf event, so where would that leave the golfing organizations?
Is Wie trying to send a message that she is so much better than the other lady players hence her decision to play in the Mens event this week? Maybe she is, but I would like to see her win her win a couple of ladies big tournaments just to prove her point.

To answer your question: "Does she risk becoming a curiosity of the women's game?"

I think she has gone past this and is now the joke of the women's game. Very sad really for someone who has so much talent. She is 224 in the womens' rankings and can't unerstand the rules of the game.

It is time she had a reality check and made the decision to get someone sensible to advise her on the best way forward - her current set are not doing the job.

I just feel sorry for her.

Cunning strategy by Wie and her coach, clearly by playing the PGA circuit she is honing her skills and especially her long game skills far quicker than she would on the LPGA. Even if she never makes the cut she still plays 2 out of 4 rounds each time which is all good pressure experience and she is getting paid probably more than she would on the LPGA even if she was winning the occasional tournament because of the high profile she enjoys as the only woman challenging the men. Women tennis players practice all the time against men to improve their game and would no doubt play in mens tournaments as well, if they could, except here they would probably go out first round almost every time and not get any worthwhile match experience. All Wie has to do is keep playing the PGA for 2 or 3 more years when she will still be only 22, by which time she may well have improved her game beyond the reach of most of the women and can then clean up on the women's circuit. Good luck to her!

Seeing as last on the leaderboard is 16 over, Michelle's 1 over 73 is very respectable.

If she makes the cut, no doubt people will say it's not an a list event.

Well done Michelle.

It isn't, dj. The A-list event is the WGC Bridgestone Invitational at Akron, Ohio.

I dont agree that it will make her a better player, i mean, fair enough she can play on the mens tour if she wants, although not male, amateur golfers also make it to these tournements and, although male, they are in a PROFESSIONAL event so there isnt that much of a difference between a male amateur and a female professional. We continue to talk about other factors.. her parents motives have totally overweighed there obligation to do whats best for their daughter and her career, however there is alot to do with what she has not done on tour. There was very little problem when Sorenstam attempted to make a cut on the mens tour, mainly due to the fact that she is arguably the greatest female ever to play the game, she is 18 and seems to be pretty well educated on top of that, she can make decisions on her own. I think the problem is she isnt proving herself on the ladies tour and hiding in the shadow of the sponsors invites for the mens tour while taking places of men trying to make their card. I know from experience of losing my card and how financially detrimental it is. When an 18 year old girl has 40mil plus in the bank she should be worrying about winning tournements, not trying to just make the cut. Duval was spot on, someone who is strugglin mentally with their game, the last place they should be is knowing their going on a tour with players who love to walk over this mentality.

Just like her golf game at the minute, i feel its poor decision making.
