Anyone for the quadruple?

Premier League Chelsea
comment on the article

Morning gentlemen,

Liverpool fan here in peace,

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the possibility of a team ever winning all four trophies in one season

Chelsea were fighting on all four front the past couple of seasons, as were Rangers in the SPL

As far as I'm aware it's not been done before, so does anybody think it feasible that a team could win on all four fronts?

Personally, as strong as teams like Man United and Chelsea are I really don't think it is possible. As strong as United are right now, there is always another rival team who on their day could beat them in one of the cups therefore knocking the team out

Also, slices of bad luck occur, take pompey at old trafford for example, man united hammered on the pompey door all game only to have a blatant penalty turned down, then one given against them. These little slices of misfortune are surely another stumbling block in the race for all four trophies.

Injuries can also play a major part with key players missing in one or two games in a knockout competition and it's all over...

And with the league cup not being taken seriously anymore by the top four teams, this surely means this trophy is an early casualty in the hunt for the four pieces of silverware

Does this mean that teams have decided the quadruple is impossible so therefore they sacrifice this "lesser" trophy in order to challenge for the the three bigger prizes of PL, CL, and FA Cup?

Has anyone come close? And does anybody think it even possible if the top teams actually had a go at all four competitions??

hi everyone. scolari is one of the best coach of the world and he obviously has the habit of winning and this made him say the statment that he can win all the trophy in one season. he may face a big trouble to prove his statement which needs a lot of hard work.BUT AS GOD SAYS "EVERY THING IS POSSIBLE IN THIS WORLD IF WE DECIDE AND WORK HARD " i as a big ban of chelsea wish him a very good luck.

I reckon Chelsea have a better chance of achieving it than anybody else. We had a bad season in 2007/08 due to upheaval, but we are a lot stronger and more versatile this season and have the best squad and best manager. I've been supporting Chelsea for 30 years and I've got a good feeling about this season. Perhaps there are a few Johnny come lately fans but so what..welcome on board and spend a few quid! Chelsea intend to stay challenging for everything for a long time so get used to the success.

On the squad part I'll say you may be right, based on depth and experience. It's pretty close either way though, factors such as how Anelka and Sheva play rather than their pedigree should be taken into account.

The manager statement is way off though. Scolari won the World Cup with a Brazillian team that probably would have won it with most anyone with an ounce of knowledge in charge.

He took the home country to the Finals in a tournament that was won byu Greece.

His club experience is all in South America so in reality Scolari is an unproven manager at best.

Well respected I agree but certainly not ain a position where you can rate him above Fergie, Wenger, Jose or even Rafa Benitez at this point in time.

It's not like you can even judge him on transfer activity yet either.

As a United fan I would first like to express my respect to a Liverpool supporter who is gracious enough to give credit where it is due.
In answer to the question, I would reference the 1999 season where, if my memory is accurate, we were one match short of the quadruple. Granted, it was a weaker Premiership and whatever bad luck we may have had during the course of the season was more than made up for in the Champions League final. But all these things aside, it shows it is feasible and I feel it is only a matter of time before a team does it, although not while the Premiership is as tough as it is at the moment.

Also in response to certain comments about resiliency in the United team - very few champions have won the league with a flawless season, the Arsenal 'untouchables' probably the closest that I can recall, the league champions are never decided when the teams are playing well, they are decided when the form disappears and the teams spirit and collective will come into question. Under Ferguson, United may well have a reputation as whingers, but they never quit and never turn on each other. Anybody who does is asked to leave (Stam, Keane and the dutch striker whose name I can't spell). I'm not holding up United as paragons, Chelsea showed as much resiliency last season, but to put the last two seasons down to luck is an insult to the players and what they achieved.

Let's get something straight; Scolari said he was aiming to win all four competitions. He said he wanted to win every game.

Does that mean he really expects to win all competitions with a 100% win record? I'm not going to tell you the answer...

Now in the real world he knows a double would be a fantastic result and anything more a bonus, but you don't win a thing if you don't 'aim to win'!

Now as to whether it's possible to win all 4 trophies; yes of course it is.

It would take a squad with quality in depth, a decent chunk of luck with fixtures (easy home cup draws please), injuries (none) and preferable no non-club competitions (ACON.

Even then it's not very likely, but if any team has the SQUAD to manage it then it's Chelsea.

No-one else can afford the squad to buy that kind of success, but you can't buy the luck!

Oh, and ideally, it's better if you don't sack your manager a few weeks into the season if you can possibly help it.

Has any other team finished 2nd in the league and got to two cup finals in the same season as sacking a manager?

That's a resilient team!

Phil Scolari should be running for PM with such an unachievable manifesto as that one !
