Australia v Team GB

comment on the article

Australian cyclist Brett Lancaster appears in the mood to help his country reclaim their team pursuit world record from Great Britain at the Olympics.

Can they do it? And how good is Team GB?

I love it.

There is a comment here in US football. "If you get to the end zone, look like you've been there before."

You guys clearly are up your selves in a completely new experience - that of being ranked number 1.

No one is more disappointed by and for Cadel than Cadel. I think he rode like a Victorian, but with no chance in the team he was in.

Who's the top pom in the GC? David Miller?? As his dose went down, so did his talent. However his Hypocrisy, and his popularity in England (not Britain )rose.

I do love to watch Cavendish though. He's a star. He still has to finish a Tour and win a green jersey (not borrow one) before you can compare him to Robbie McEwen.

I suspect this will be the year for GB in the track. Though for a population almost 3 X Australia, you really are a soft lot on the world stage.

Greentrousers,
Strewth,
Are you still trotting out that 'Australia is better than Britain at sport because of its smaller population line'?

Mate,
Its not about population but about resources.
australia has pumped far more money than Britain into sport since it failed to win a single gold medal at Montreal in 1976;perhaps the tables are turning now that Britain's beginning to chanel significant resources into sport.

By the way,how have Australian cyclists performed in the Beijing olympic road races? Did Evans take part? didn't see his name among medallists, but did note that the British cyclist Nicole Cook won gold in women's race and British cyclist Pooley took silver in women's time trial

I als saw British heavyweight mens four crush a field including Australia and New Zealand this morning.

Mate,
your blokes were gasping whereas the British four seemed hardly out of breath.

I enjoyed the Aussie olympic officials comments about British swimmers not using the soap in showers.

The flaming golars!

Archie, you missed the point of my post.

I was never trying to positively handicap Oz via a smaller population. We don't have to do that. Oz is way ahead on the medal standings as I type.

No I was saying that even though you had a larger population, it was mainly made up of soft athletes and overzealous fans who are unused to being in the winners circle.

My favourite cartoon while I was in the UK was two old guys at the bar saying - "1966, 2003 - who can stand all this excitement?"

I have never seen a country celebrate history like you guys do. Every major competition you trot out the 1966 story. I think all the athletes in that video are dead now.

I am waiting for the Henry VIII story when wrestling is shown at the Olympics.

Greenie,
Come on mate.
You Were making the smaller population point!

Australia tops Britain on medals table today but thats because swimming events have come first on schedule;things may change over the weekend.

Do you really think that the likes of Radliffe, the British mens four etc,are soft?

Now the British are beginning to organise /fund sports effectively it may be Aystralia that will be living on past glories

Your old mate,
Archleftack

Mate,
Would you say Australia's rugby union scrum is 'soft'or just flaccid?

I would say its flaccid. They certainly need to harden up.

I do love Paula. She is a terrific London tour guide. I hope she gets to see all of the Great Wall, and gets back to the stadium. Actually I am having fun at her expense and not at yours. So that's not fair. I hope she wins it. She is a terrific marathoner. She's not the Tim Henman of the marathon.

The other Pom I love to watch is Hoy. He is a stud.

Lot's of Olympics to go. I am already tired of the swimming, I can't wait for the track.

I have picked Rooney as an outsider to bronze in my old event, the 400m hombres. It'll be a highlight.

Good luck Archie.

Nice one Green Trousers.

I suppose Henman might be compared to that Aussie rower in the eights who just stopped rowing at Athens in 2008?

Or is that too harsh?

Too harsh on Henman or on the rower?

Keep in touch Greentrousers!

I believe you mean "Lay Down Sally". Which I do think is particularly cruel. But appropriate. Even though she lay down, she did get to the finish line. Of course the others carried her.

Hey I just watched "Our Paula."

And watched, and watched, and watched....23rd.

Better than Athens. What a soap opera.

Yes,
Paula must feel really empty-in more senses than one.

Hats off to anna Meares,though-coming second to a great champion is no disgrace
