Khans New Trainer Announced

Well it wasnt McGirt or the Mayweather's which I must be honest I am slightly dissapointed about, it is however Jorge Rubio Gamboa's trainer. Taken from eastside boxing:

Rubio is backed up with impressive credentials and currently works with unbeaten featherweight prospect and 2004 Olympic Champion Yuriorkis Gamboa. As coach of the renown Cuban national amateur squad, he mentored world amateur champion Mario Kindelan - who Khan defeated in his last amateur bout.

Khan said, "I'm delighted that Jorge is now my trainer and I look forward to working with him towards winning the world title. I met with a lot of trainers when I was in America and had plenty of training sessions with everyone and they were happy to come and work with me in Bolton. But I was impressed most by Jorge and his set up and more importantly I felt comfortable working with him and his training methods will give me a new dimension."

Rubio said, "It's fantastic to be given the opportunity to work with such a natural talent like Amir and I believe that I can bring the best out in him. I'm really impressed by what I've seen of him so far and I know that we still have a lot of work to do."

Khan worked with Dean Powell for his last fight - a five round war against Michael Gomez last month that Khan won with a fifth round TKO - who will remain as part of the corner team.

What do people think of this appointment, I feel that the fact he was able to train in Bolton may have alot to do with this appointment?

If he has chosen Rubio over the likes of Freddie Roach or Roger Mayweather then I have to agree with you that the fact Rubio is happy for Khan to remain training in Bolton has a lot to do with the appointment.
Another thing is , top trainers want their boxers fighting credible opponents.Something Khan doesn't really want to do at present.
If training and fighting in America, the chances are he would be coming up againt American journeymen that are an unknown quanitity and could take Khan out.
Far safer to stay at home and fight known domestic level guys and watch the cash roll in.

Irespective of the actual location, i think its a good appointment, simply because Kindelan was very defensive and looking at the first fight he had great defensive techniques that even a very quick Khan could not exploit, so if they can make an improvement in his defensive abilities then i feel this could be a step in the right direction because with Khan as soon as he drops the left hes hurt even with a feather puncher or a blown up featherweight. Im happy that a new trainer was required but im sad that hes a great prospect but penned a deal with Fwank warren. I mean hes managed joe for 15 years but his sports network are sueing him (mirrorsport. The fact here is he really doesnt give a tosh about his fighters, gives them mediacore apponenets and maintains unbeaten runs and then lets them take the slack about quality of opponents while he enjoys his millions in the background.

I worry that the so called 'Team Khan' is heading the same way as the Hamed & Hatton families. Too many hangers appearing in the ring after each fight, the ex taxi driver 'manager' wanting his face in every TV interview, Khans father keen to get his face & opinion in the media.....Family members with with little or no experience of sport or big business. Amateurs trying to be big time. Amir is the cash cow & they all want a share. Whats the odds that Rubio is considerably cheaper to hire than the other names mentioned? Maybe I am just cynical

"top trainers want their boxers fighting credible opponents.Something Khan doesn't really want to do at present." -???

Are you serious? He was calling out Campbell and Pacman two fights ago! If it was up to him he would have fought any of the champs by now, the boy is fearless, problem is though he thinks he is slightly better then he is and Frank Warren is scared of him losing so gives him poor fighters to fight.

Can someone now comment on Murray or Mitchell's padded record now?

Also Rubio is not the big name we expected (either Mayweather or Roach or McGirt) but we can't just say he is an amteur trainer, especially when I know most of you people on this board have already hailed Gamboa as the next coming. If he gets to spar with Gamboa it is a step up though so that is enough.

COME ON KHAN!

And what exactly would happen to Khan if he met any of those 2 at present?
That's exactly what I meant with "something Khan really doesn't want to do at present"
I'm not suggesting Khan isn't a class act.
I just think he's not aiming higher than he should or is capable of.
I'm pretty sure this appointment isn't permanent and that he will be trained by the likes of Mayweather/Roach/McGirt in 5/6 fights time but untill he is actually put in against credible LIGHTWEIGHTS his learning curve is going to progress slowly.
