Saturday's gossip column

comment on the article

Plenty of chat in today's papers about Manchester United hoping to make their loan deal for Carlos Tevez permanent - but is £35m too steep for the Argentine striker?

Elsewhere, there is a bit of a race on for Blackburn keeper Brad Friedel now Paul Robinson has moved to Ewood Park.

Aston Villa and Manchester City both want the veteran American...Friedel might be number one at Villa (despite Martin O'Neill having already spent £2m on Brad Guzan) but would he (or should he) displace Joe Hart at City...not sure about that myself!

Liverpool's pursuit of Robbie Keane continues but one interesting line in The Guardian is that Tottenham have been told that David Villa (another of Reds' boss Rafa Benitez's summer targets) is interested in joining them.

With the Gareth Barry saga still dragging on, Benitez clearly has £20m or so burning a hole in his pocket...but are Keane and Barry (or Villa) right for Liverpool?

Finally, a bit of controversy about the air miles that clubs are clocking up in pursuit of the pre-season dollar. It can't be good for the players but that won't stop Manchester United travelling 3,000 miles this weekend to play Portsmouth in Nigeria, straight after taking on the Kaizer Chiefs (the football club, not the indie band) in South Africa.

I remember when most north-west clubs used to spend their pre-season on the Isle of Man...and that was considered exotic.

Oh, and if you have any rumours or pieces of gossip yourself, share them with the rest of the class here. Thanks.

Just seen the result and read the comments of Fergie after out 4-0 pre season win in the vodacom challenge (cup 1 of 8 in the bag)... intersting reading as he suggests Possabon and Campbell are part of his 1st team plans.

Thoughts any Utd fans? Also does anyone know why Welbeck doesn't seem to be involved? I'm guessing either injured or (if England are there) he's at the Euro U19 Championships, can anyone confirm?

seems that the trend of CL clubs playing secondraters is producing some interesting? scorlines. I suppose it helps redistribute wealth down the leagues. Are Barca playing plymouth next?? Well done Villa

Pre-season is about building match fitness and trying out new systems. At this stage teams and players are going through a heavy conditioning phase in their training so not best prepared for games. They rearly want or are prepared full intensity games which is why most clubs play lower league and smaller teams (and usually don't hammer them) at this stage. a lot of clubs like to go on tour prbably for team building reasons and will reduce the conditioning and increase the intensity and quality of games as they get closer to the season.

Smaller clubs obviously see it as a chance to make some decent money which is only fair and a good thing if you ask me for the bigger clubs to do.

Bronco, i totally agree and think that is true, but it beggars the question, based on your reasons, why Man Utd are playing pompey in nigeria? this is a money driven game. which given they are the highest earners (in epl) why do they need it - not out of kindness to their long time bogey team

Probably, but it's not a massive imposition to Man Utd and it's no different to what most sides are doing so no massively bothered... those mortgage payments aren't going to pay themselves winkeye

I think Michael Owen is a disgrace - he is injury prone and he still wants more money. Hasnt he made enough. Comes over as squeaky clean BUT. If I were Newcastle his contract would be based on appearances and goals and if any other club is daft enough to sign him it should be on the same basis. He is basically a greedy *******

SangCule - I'd take that swop, definitely. Although by far the biggest priority is to keep Messi fit - if this happens for a full season, he will destroy teams by the dozen.

Messisgod - the latest I have is Eto'o+E10m = Benzami, plus E20m for Silva. As he plays on the left(?) looks like Pep wants to free up Henry, as promised.
Forca Barca.
